Amazon and Google dominate global smart speaker market
Strategy Analytics has published a report in regard to the current state of the global smart speaker market. In terms of the amount of units shipped Amazon leads the way, shipping four million devices in Q1 2018 (up from two million in Q1 2017). Google follows with 2.4 million shipments, while Alibaba, Apple, Xiaomi, and “Others” round up the table. The total amount of units shipped in the first quarter of this year has been estimated at 9.2 million, which is a massive increase on the Q1 2017 total of 2.4 million.
The market share figures may seem like bad news for Amazon at a first glance; however, market share reductions are inevitable when new entrants release products onto the market or established players dramatically increase shipments (Google went from shipping 300,000 units in Q1 2017 to 2.4 million in Q1 2018). Amazon’s market share slipped from 81.8% to 43.6%, which according to the report is partially due to the strong sales enjoyed by Chinese companies like Alibaba and Xiaomi in their domestic market.
Apple has managed to gain a spot in the global smart speaker market, placing fourth after shipping an estimated 600,000 units in Q1 2018.
