Amazon Alexa Tablet 8 offers compact aluminum unibody and 14h battery life for $229

Alongside the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro Amazon today also announced the more compact Alexa Tablet 8. The tablet is not only smaller, but also significantly cheaper, which leads to some major cost-cutting measures in its specifications. However, the Alexa Tablet 8 also features a high-quality aluminum unibody chassis that is 7.95 millimeters thick and weighs 329 grams.
The battery is relatively small at 4,600 mAh, but is still said to offer 14 hours of video playback. The centerpiece of the tablet is the 8.7-inch IPS panel, which offers a resolution of 1,340 x 800 pixels, a refresh rate of 60 Hz and a brightness of 400 nits. With the MediaTek Kompanio 540 the tablet promises only modest performance, as the chip is equipped with two ARM Cortex-A78 performance cores with boost clock speeds of up to 2.5 GHz and six Cortex-A55 efficiency cores.
Amazon pairs the processor with just 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB to 128 GB of flash storage. The tablet also features an 8-megapixel main camera, a 5 MP selfie camera and support for Wi-Fi 6. The tablet ships with Android and can access the Google Play Store. The device offers access to Amazon's Alexa+ AI assistant. The base model displays ads on both the lock screen and the screensaver.
Pricing and availability
The Amazon Alexa Tablet 8 is now available for pre-order on Amazon, with shipping starting on October 14. The base model with 64 GB of flash storage and lock screen ads costs $229, or $249 without ads. Amazon charges an additional $50 for 256 GB of storage.
