Acer Aspire 5 A515-56 review: Good value office laptop with reasonable battery life

The Aspire 5 range from the company Acer consists of countless models (Intel as well as AMD CPUs, with/ without a dGPU) which make up Acer's bread and butter business. The model shown here - a 15.6 inch office notebook - is powered by a Pentium Gold 7505 processor (Tiger Lake) and can be had for around 500 euros. We have already tested an identical, more expensive member of the series, the Aspire 5 A515-56-511A (Core i5-1135G7, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD). Competitors include devices such as the Dell Inspiron 15 3505, the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15ITL05, the HP 250 G7 and the Lenovo V15 G2 ALC.

Case & Connectivity - A515 without a memory card reader
The silver-gray case comprises metal (lid) and plastic elements (base unit). Acer relies on matte, smooth surfaces. While both the base unit and the lid can be twisted slightly, any signs of poor finishing are nowhere to be found. The battery (screwed not glued) as well as the other internals are accessible on removing the bottom case. The built-in webcam (0.9 MP, max. 1280 x 720 pixels) doesn't possess a mechanical cover.
The computer has three USB-A ports (1x USB 2.0, 2x USB 3.2 Gen 1) and a USB-C slot (USB 3.2 Gen 1). The latter supports neither Power Delivery nor DisplayPort via USB-C. That means only one video output is available with the HDMI connection. A memory card reader is also not on board.
The WLAN transfer rates are good, determined under optimum conditions (no other WLAN-enabled devices nearby, short distance between laptop and server PC) but do not fully correspond to the capabilities of the WiFi chip (MediaTek MT7921; 802.11ax).

Input devices - The Acer laptop has backlit keys
The backlit, chiclet keyboard keys (one brightness level) have short travel and a clear pressure point. The key resistance is acceptable. The keyboard wobbles slightly while typing which hasn't proven to be overly annoying. All in all, Acer has delivered a keyboard suitable for everday use.
A multitouch capable click pad (approx. 10.5 x 7.8 cm) serves as a mouse replacement. Its smooth surface makes gliding easy for the fingers.
It also responds to input in the corners. The pad has both short travel and a clear pressure point.
Screen - IPS technology
The matte 15.6-inch screen (1920 x 1080 pixels) leaves the competition behind with a good contrast ratio of 1800:1. In the area of maximum screen brightness (251.8 cd/m²) the value we consider to be decent (300 cd/m² or higher, that is) is not achieved, and the panel is even less bright when on battery power. Overall, the competition doesn't fare any better. Positive: irrespective of the brightness setting, the panel displays no PWM flickering.

* ... smaller is better
The screen displays colors properly out of the box: with a deviation of 3.58, the target (DeltaE < 3) is narrowly missed. A callibration is not recommended: although a more even grayscale is displayed, it also increases the color deviation to 4.85.
The screen cannot display the color spaces AdobeRGB (38 %), sRGB (56 %) and DCI-P3 (37 %). For this reason, the panel is not made for application scenarios which require accurate color reproduction. In this regard, the competition doesn't fare any better.

Performance - Aspire 5 comes with Tiger Lake
Acer offers the Aspire 5 A515-56 - an office laptop in 15.6-inch format - in innumerable configurations ranging from 400 to 900 euros. The model tested here finds itself in the lower half of the pricing range. Tiger Lake processors from Pentium to Core i7 are used here. Certain (higher priced) SKUs have a GeForce MX450 graphics core on board making both gaming and graphics intensive applications possible.
Test conditions
You can choose from three pre-installed performance profiles ("normal mode", "performance mode", "silent mode") using the key combination "Fn" + "F". The test was carried out with the "normal mode" profile active. No performance differences between the profiles were detected. In any case, the CPU power limits are 15 watts (PL1) and 38 watts (PL2).
Processor
The Pentium Gold 7505 dual-core processor (Tiger Lake family) operates at a base clock speed of 2 GHz. An increase to 3.5 GHz is possible thanks to turbo mode. Hyper-Threading (two threads per core) is supported.
The Cinebench R15 multi-thread test is initially run at 3.4 GHz, then the clock speed sinks to between 3 and 3.2 GHz. The single-thread test is carried out at 1.9 to 3.4 GHz. On battery, the clock speeds are considerably lower. The CB R15 loop test confirms sustained CPU turbo use. The Pentium places itself in the lower part of the performance table but is a good choice for a simple, inexpensive office laptop. For everyday use (office, internet, streaming), the CPU copes well without running into any problems.

System Performance
The smoothly running system handles office and internet applications with ease. Acer leaves part of the computing power idle as the RAM (8 GB, DDR4-3200, onboard) only runs in single-channel mode. It would pay off to install a memory module. The transfer rate of the available memory is on a normal level for DDR4-3200 memory. The PCMark results are decent.

Mass storage
The built-in 512 GB SSD (PCIe 3, M.2 2280) from SK Hynix delivers good transfer speeds but is not amongst the top SSD models. Unfortunately, it struggles with dips in performance due to thermal throttling. The Aspire offers additional space for a 2.5-inch storage medium. The SATA slot and mounting frame are inside the laptop.

Graphics card
Intel's UHD Graphics Xe G4 graphics core can operate continuously at full power (1,250 MHz) - as revealed by the Witcher 3 test. The below average benchmark results can be traced back to the RAM running in single channel mode. An increase in graphics performance would be achieved by activating the dual channel mode (installation of a memory module).
The A515 is not a gaming laptop. Nevertheless, the hardware can run some undemanding games smoothly at low settings - titles such as GTA V, Dota 2 Reborn and Diablo III. This holds true as long as dual-channel mode is active (see comparison tables).

Temperature
During routine use (office, internet) the case temperatures remain in the green zone. Under load (stress test) the laptop hardly warms up. The CPU temperatures hover at around 60 degrees Celsius (140 F) and therefore cause no great concern.
The stress test (Prime95 and Furmark running for at least an hour) represents an extreme scenario for testing the system stability under full load. At the start of the test CPU (3.4 GHz) and GPU (1,250 MHz) achieve their maximum clock speeds. While the CPU clock speed drops to 1.4 GHz in the course of the test, the GPU clock speed stabilizes itself at 1,000 MHz.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 36.9 °C / 98 F, compared to the average of 34.3 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 34.4 °C / 94 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 25.4 °C / 78 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 25.3 °C / 77.5 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(+) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.6 °C / 81.7 F (+2.3 °C / 4.2 F).

Power consumption
All in all, the laptop needs relatively little power, all thanks to the energy-efficient Pentium processor. Power consumption during stress tests (Prime95 + Furmark, Witcher 3) decreases a little over time. The included power supply (45 Watt) is good enough for the job.

Battery Life
In real-life WLAN tests, the 15.6-inch laptop manages a runnning time of 7 hours 51 minutes (opening websites using a script). It clearly leaves most of the competition behind when it comes to battery life due to the large battery capacity (53 Wh). Only the Lenovo V15 G2 is on a par - in spite of only having a 38 Wh capacity battery. The V15's efficient Ryzen 5 5500U APU makes itself felt here.
Note: our test model has a slightly larger battery capacity (53 Wh vs 48 Wh) than the previously tested sister model.
Pros
Cons
Verdict - An affordable office laptop without any serious weaknesses
The combination of slim exterior, relatively low weight (approx. 1.7 kg) and 8 hour real-life battery runtime makes the Acer Aspire 5 a truly mobile laptop. The modest Tiger Lake processor supports this area and simultaneously ensures an affordable price point.
The Acer Aspire 5 A515-56 represents a well-rounded office laptop for a small budget.
The laptop is well equipped for office and internet use with its Pentium Gold 7505 CPU, 8 GB RAM (single channel mode, soldered) and a PCIe 3-based SSD (512 GB, M.2 2280). The A515 produces little noise and stays cool.
The screen (15.6-inch, FHD, IPS) might not win any prizes but is entirely appropriate for the price. In addition, there is also a backlit keyboard that didn't leave behind any negative impressions. Too bad: the USB-C port supports neither Power Delivery nor DisplayPort.
The 500 euro price point is acceptable for the complete package but the computer on offer is definitely not a bargain. If you can do without Windows OS and cope with a 256 GB SSD, an investment of only 400 euros is neccessary. A sister model with a Core i3, 256 GB SSD and Windows 11 is available for 450 euros. Both cheaper models appear more attractive to us. The money saved could be invested in additional RAM (to enable dual channel mode).
An alternative to the Aspire would be the Lenovo V15 G2 ALC. Thanks to the Ryzen 5 5500U APU it offers considerably higher GPU and multi-thread CPU performance but is burdened by a significantly worse screen.
