With the Aspire 5 A515-45-R4R1 (NX.A82EV.00H), Acer offers an affordable laptop with a 15.6-inch display for around 600 Euros (~$687). The device, which weighs around 1.7 kg (~3.7 lb), impresses in the test not only with its simple, high-quality design, but also with good workmanship.
The display of the Acer Aspire 5 A515-45 offers a Full HD resolution and presents an image rich in contrast and with good black values. On the other hand, the brightness and color space coverage are rather limited. However, the laptop is also usable outdoors.
The laptop shows some weaknesses in the performance. The fault doesn't lie in the AMD Ryzen 7 5700U processor, which runs at a clock speed of up to 4.3 GHz and produces solid, even if below-average, results in our benchmarks. An even larger weakness lies in the device having only 8 GB of RAM. In combination with the limited AMD Radeon RX Vega 8 (Ryzen 4000) onboard graphics, this results in a mediocre gaming performance and also causes some stutters with higher demands on the system. However, the RAM can optionally be upgraded up to 20 GB, and there is also space in the case for an additional SSD/HDD.
Aside from this weakness and the rather mediocre speakers, the Acer Aspire 5 A515-45-R4R1 doesn't show any other grave faults - particularly if you consider its price. While there is only a single USB-C connection, there are three USB-A ports as well as a HDMI and a LAN port. A fingerprint sensor is also available, together with a long battery life and quiet operation.

I have been fascinated by technology for around 25 years – especially technology that makes life easier rather than more complicated. Mobile devices such as laptops, smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches are particularly close to my heart as is the booming subject of smart homes. I have been working in these areas for several years now as a news and reviews editor. I have been active with various websites, including the smart home blogs homee, Nuki, and siio, as well as tech portals such as Giga and TechRadar. I have been writing news and laptop reviews for Notebookcheck since 2020.
