AMD Ryzen 9 5900H delivers +23% single-core performance gain over Ryzen 9 4900H on Geekbench while cocking a snook at the Intel Core i7-10700K
We already knew about the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX and Ryzen 9 5900HS and now we have evidence of a regular Ryzen 9 5900H variant thanks to Tum Apisak. The powerful mobile processor appears to be an 8-core, 16-thread part with a base clock of 3.30 GHz and a boost rate of 4.64 GHz in this Geekbench 5 listing. The identifier shows this Ryzen 9 5900H is at an early stepping 0 stage, which means more performance can be expected from it as processes are further refined toward launch time.
As for comparisons, the Ryzen 9 5900H appears to be a good step-up from the Renoir Zen 2-based Ryzen 9 4900H, which is no slouch in itself (it can go toe-to-toe against the Intel Core i9-10980HK in Geekbench tests even though the latter has a much higher boost clock). The upcoming Cezanne Zen 3-based part scored 1,520 points in the single-core test and 9,325 in the multi-core test. These represent values that are +23.58% and +5.97% over the results we measured with the Ryzen 9 4900H in Geekbench 5. While the multi-core gain is acceptable, the single-core gain is outstanding.
Unfortunately, the laptop containing the Ryzen 9 5900H mobile APU isn’t revealed in the Geekbench listing, although a few Ryzen 5000 laptops have started making themselves known. TDP is likely to be set at around 45 W for the Zen 3 processor, with the upcoming Ryzen 5000 H-series looking very promising. It might be cherry-picking, but these are results that put the Ryzen 9 5900H beyond a power-hungry desktop CPU like the i7-10700K (125 W TDP, 8/16, 1,376 single, 8,939 multi). With the right cooling solution in place, future users should find themselves with a lot of mobile processing power to play with.
