Tesla's Model 3 is the company's best-selling car to date, largely thanks to its relatively low starting price of US$40,240 before incentives. Volvo's EX30, on the other hand, appears to be coming directly for Tesla's dominance over the electric market with the recent announcement of a US$34,950 price tag, but a lack of US tax incentives may make the compact electric crossover miss its mark.
The Volvo EX30 comes in two drivetrain options with a variety of trims available in each version. The rear-wheel drive Single Motor Extended Range drivetrain is expected to deliver around 275 miles of EPA range, and will be available in the following trim options and prices:
- Core: US$34,950
- Plus: US$38,900
- Ultra:US$40,600
The Twin Motor Performance version, on the other hand delivers 265 miles of EPA estimated range but trades that range for a lightning-quick 0-60 mph time of 3.4 seconds. Volvo will offer two versions of the Twin Motor EX30:
- Plus: US$44,900
- Ultra: US$46,600
For reference, the Tesla Model 3 delivers 272 miles of range and 0-60 mph times of 5.8 seconds in its standard RWD trim, while the Dual-Motor AWD Long Range bumps that up to 333 miles and 4.2 seconds, and the Model 3 Performance is capable of 315 miles of range and a 3.1-second 0-60 mph time.
Volvo provided some details about the standard equipment that will be found in Volvo EX30. Firstly, the EX30's interior will be decked out with a mixture of recycled and leather-free materials — hopefully these hold up better than Apple's recent stab at going leather-free. In terms of tech, the Core EX30 is set to feature Google built-in, wireless Apple CarPlay, and a host of safety features, including a Driver Alert System, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), Door Opening Alert and Front & Rear Collision Mitigation.
The Plus trim upgrades the in-vehicle tech to include Harmon Kardon Premium Sound and adds a dual-tone panoramic roof and 19-inch wheels. Ultra trims will include Pilot Assist with Lane Change Assistance, 360 Camera with 3D View, and Park Pilot Assist.
Shoppers should also bear in mind that all of the EX30 trims will incur a US$1,295 destination fee, which is not included in the MSRP.
