The 2025 XMG NEO 16 is one of the fastest gaming notebooks, but both G-Sync and Advanced Optimus were still missing. Now, it is confirmed that the two features will not be available for the current model generation.

The NEO 16 is the fastest gaming laptop from German manufacturer XMG and one of the fastest gaming machines overall. It is also one of the few high-end models where you can decide between Intel and AMD processors and you can also connect an external water-cooling solution to reduce temperatures as well as fan noise. Thanks to the new Mini-LED panel, you also get a really good screen and we already reviewed the current model comprehensively.

However, there were issues as well, because the NEO 16 did not yet support G-Sync for the internal screen as well as Nvidia's Advanced Optimus GPU switching. There is obviously a MUX switch, but in order to deactivate the integrated graphics unit, you will have to restart the laptop. XMG was very transparent about the whole situation since the NEO 16 came into the market and gave regular progress reports on its own website, since they were working hard on a solution with Nvidia. Now though, we have confirmation that the two features will not be available for the current model generation of the NEO 16 (and also the XMG PRO 16).

Nvidia and XMG did find a solution, but it would have required multiple updates, including a firmware update for the LCD panel. During internal tests, however, this process turned out to be very unreliable and there is even the risk of damaging the display. XMG does not want to put early buyers at a disadvantage, so the two features will not be active on new purchases, either.

This means the XMG NEO 16 is definitely at a disadvantage compared to other high-end rivals. The MUX switch is obviously available and the integrated GOU of the processor can be deactivated, but as we have mentioned before, this requires a reboot of the laptop. The lack of G-Sync for the internal screen is a bigger issue in our opinion, even though G-Sync is available on external screens.

The NEO 16 still stays one of the fastest gaming notebooks and you will have to decide for yourself whether the lack of the features impacts your purchase decision. Please see our reviews of the NEO 16 for more information on the devices:
