Leaks dating back several years have suggested that a Donkey Kong movie is in development. Now, a copyright filing involving Nintendo and Universal Pictures has surfaced on a public records website. The U.S.-based resource recorded the copyright on June 6th with the title "Untitled Donkey Kong Project; Motion picture." President Shuntaro Furukawa had recently hinted that additional Nintendo movies are in the works.
Interest in the Nintendo franchise is surging as the July 17th Donkey Kong Bananza release date approaches. However, the Switch 2 game is hardly the only new attraction featuring the famous gorilla. Super Nintendo World in Universal Japan opened Donkey Kong Country in 2024, headlined by a roller-coaster. The Mine Cart Madness ride also appeared at Florida's Epic Universe this year.
As early as 2021, rumors began circulating about the now copyrighted film. Already confirmed to voice Donkey Kong in The Super Mario Bros. Movie., Giant Freakin Robot reported that Seth Rogen would also represent the character in his own Nintendo feature. Since then, fans have learned about a Mario Bros. sequel and a live-action Zelda movie, both of which should debut in 2026-27.
During a June investor meeting, Shuntaro Furukawa reaffirmed that the company was targeting a broader audience. Fans have since speculated about what other Nintendo franchises may emerge on giant screens. Metroid Prime and Star Fox are two IPs that some fans would like to see adapted for cinemas.
Currently, aside from Seth Rogen's participation, little is known about the potential next entry in a series of Nintendo movies. Diddy Kong and Cranky Kong are two supporting characters who may star in the film. Considering the prominent role Pauline plays in Donkey Kong Bananza, the singer could also at least contribute to the film's soundtrack.
