Qualcomm's Mirasol Color Display launched

Mirasol technology to aid e-readers and tablets

We’ve witnessed a slew of interesting releases in the display segment this week. And now Qualcomm has come forward with its own miracle. Qualcomm MEMS technologies has developed a new display technology capable of exhibiting high-quality color with no requirement of backlighting or color filters. Based on a reflective MEMS-based technology called interferometric modulation (IMOD), this display is derived from butterfly iridescence. Qualcomm says that this technology is both bistable (i.e. extremely low power) as well as highly reflective (i.e. the display itself can be seen even in direct sunlight).

This 5.7-inch XGA display, having very low power requirements, is expected not only to work for e-readers and tablets, but for other devices and application areas as well later this year. Qualcomm VP of Business Development, James Cathey, is reported to have said that they are already in talks with several clients in this regard. Though commercial production of the Mirasol display is scheduled to start this year at the Longton, Taiwan based 4.5G production plant built in collaboration with Foxlink, no details on the pricing front or as to when marketing will start are available. Of course, one can presume that the prices are going to be on the upper band, considering the unavailability of such a display technology in the market.

Until now, e-readers have been using E-Ink screens for display purposes owing to its low power consumption. But people expecting better color quality have been disappointed due to lack of color in such screens, which are designed primarily to run for longer hours. And now, with the introduction of Qualcomm’s Mirasol display, both purposes are attained-high color capabilities and low power consumption.  Also, with a slim body and nice edges, this one is a work of class.

This one too is very different from all the display segment products that have been launched this week. And, with its small form factor and perfect capabilities this one is sure to make a mark once it hits the market.
