Jolicloud extends support to more configurations

Includes netbooks with Atom Z5-series of processors and GMA 500 graphics

Jolicloud remains one of the most popular Linux OS choices for netbooks. It’s easy and catchy interfaces; especially icon designs have gather lots of appreciation. Their compatible configurations include the N-series Atom, mainly N270/N280 and the Z520/Z530, but until now some of the newly adapted processors and graphic cards were not accepted. Recently Jolicloud decided to extend its support to the machines with Atom Z5-series of processors and GMA 500 graphics. Although there have been support for the Z520/Z530 with other GMA card, but the GMA 500 combination is quite rare. With this they surely have improved the scope further, as till now the only graphic card supported was the GMA 950.

Some of the machines running the Z5xx and GMA 500 combination are That includes the Dell Inspiron Mini 10, Acer Aspire One AO751, Asus Eee PC T91, Eee PC 1101HA, Eee PC 1201HA, and the Sony Vaio P.

Jolicloud is being developed by Tariq Krim, the man behind Netvibes, which pioneered the concept of a personalized homepage as an alternative to traditional web portals. This custom OS is optimized for netbooks and is available as a private alpha for a select number of early testers and people who put themselves on the waiting list (on the official website). They are infact looking for more volunteers.

Jolicloud is based on Ubuntu and Debian and is optimized for use with netbooks that are always connected to the internet. Some people have named it a “Social OS” and rightly so because It enables users to install web applications that run as if they were installed natively, including Gmail, Skype, Twitter, Facebook, Meebo, and many more. The main features that distinguish this OS is the built-in support for cloud computing, which means that users are virtually connected over the internet e.g. a user can follow other Jolicloud users and get to know what groups they have joined, applications they installed, and much more.
