The new Samsung X120 – great battery life

It could’ve been lot better

The X120 is a CULV netbook from Samsung. Unlike most other CULV-powered notebooks that are 12-inch or little more than that, this one has an 11.6-inch display panel. Netbooknews has an unboxing video of the Samsung X120 and they are happy with the way Samsung has changed certain thing about its Pinetrail netbooks. Couple it with our review of the unit, and you’ll know that apart from a few bad touches here and there, it is a very good sub-notebook.

Like most Samsung netbooks, the X120 also comes in a thick paper box. Along with the netbook, you get a thin protective pouch, the huge 8850mAh battery which should be good for at least 8-9 hrs, and the power cable along with the power cord. The netbook sample netbooknews got is a silver one with chrome border. The display is glossy but the keyboard area is thankfully matte-finished. The trackpad peculiarly has both the mouse-buttons on both the sides, and not below. Lot of space above the keyboard is wasted providing no shortcuts there. The keys are, as netbooknews reviewer says, a mixture of chicket and floating. I personally don’t like the extra space towards both side of the keyboard – why leave this space when you can increase the key-size significantly utilizing it.

You can check-out our in-depth review of the X120, where we found out that it is in fact an ultra-portable netbook, and with its Ultra-low voltage Core 2 Duo processor is the reason behind such a great battery life – of course the 8850mAh battery helps. You have an SD-card reader and the sliding power switch in the front, while the usual ports like power, headphone and mic, Ethernet, HDMI out and USB ports along with the air vents lie on the left and right side. The RAM and hard disks are accessible, but there is no 3G. It comes with the Windows 7 Home Premium.

The X120 does really well in our performance tests. A 2440 in PC Mark 05 is a good score for an ultra-portable. The dual core also performs significantly better than the usual netbook processors. The integrated Intel GMA 4500M HD card comes out good with some old games.

Overall it stays above the netbooks in terms of performances, but an average display and especially keyboard layout take away some pints. We also wish it was a little cheaper.
