SkyCross announced its new single-antenna iMAT solution

The new technology prevents Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals from interfering with each other in netbooks.
SkyCross is a global designer and producer of high-performance antenna devices. Reportedly, the company announced its new creation, called iMAT. It is the first single-antenna solution that allows Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to operate in netbooks at the same time.
“Chip makers are very encouraged by this breakthrough, and manufacturers are already planning to use the SkyCross iMAT solution in their future products,” says Joe Gifford, Vice President of SkyCross.
Allegedly, the problem with 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth is that they both function at 2.4GHz, which is an obstacle since the two RF signals would interfere with each other. The separation of the two antennas, which aims at providing sufficient electrical isolation because of the physical space, was employed by some designers. Nevertheless, this approach delivers poor performance, especially in small devices such as netbooks. Allegedly, another way to solve this hindrance is to disable one process before the other one starts in attempt to create a peaceful coexistence of the two RF signals. Unfortunately, this has proven ineffective since users might be unable to use their wireless headset, mouse, speakers etc. It is believed, that the award-winning iMAT technology solves all those known issues and is a real breakthrough which ought to result in end-user satisfaction.
“Our antennas differentiate netbook brands by maximizing their connectivity range and enabling optimal simultaneous functionality at an equivalent price, which pleases consumers. Seamless Wi-Fi and Bluetooth coexistence opens the door for new applications and a user experience that will propel netbook brand loyalty.” said Gifford.
According to DisplaySearch, netbook shipments are expected to reach almost 33 million units. It is a fast-growing market and many of the devices also come with Bluetooth which makes it very important to have a technology which smoothes the “differences” between the two connectivity options. Reportedly, iMAT is a single-antenna solution which provides a greater than 35dB isolation with multiple feed points that behave like multiple antennas. This will also make it easier and more effective for consumers to use the combo mini-cards (Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in one combo card) available today.
