Apricorn Inc has released a new USB-powered hard drive called the Aegis, which offers real-time 128 bit or 256 bit AES hardware encryption. The drive has a fairly large keypad on one side and a built in USB lead. The 10-digit keypad is used to enter up to 10 different PINs to access encrypted data. The drives are shock resistant and come with a pouch for storage.

Hardware encryption offers users greater security from data thieves than software encryption, and is usually more expensive. However, Apricorn's prices seem reasonable; its cheapest drive is $99.00 ($84.00 after a mail-in rebate) and has a capacity of 250GB and features 128 bit AES encryption. Apricorn offers two other capacities: 320GB and 500GB, and all of its drives come with either 128 bit AES encryption or 256 bit AES encryption.

The specifications of the drives are fairly standard, as they use USB2.0, run at 5400rpm and have an average seek time of 12ms. Apricorn is taking orders now, directly via its website. Here are the full specifications:-
