Chicago and Philadelphia – it is coming!

It sounds like a dream come true, doesn’t it? To be sitting on a bench in the park, enjoying high-speed internet and breathing fresh air. Well, it should soon be happening to more subscribers in the USA.

WiMax is 4G wireless service, which delivers a 3Mb per second or more to users, exceeding the 3G performance. Back in 2007, Chicago, along with the Baltimore-Washington, D.C area was part of Sprint Nextel’s trials to introduce WiMax. Nevertheless, technical issues and upheaval in the company intervened.

Clearwire, in partnership with Comcast and Sprint, announced the next ten “new” markets in the USA.  Reportedly, in early November its WiMax fourth generation network should be available in Chicago, Philadelphia, three North Carolina cities and three Texas cities. Moreover, in early December these services should hit the Seattle/Tacoma area and Hawaii markets.

Allegedly, the price for combined home and mobile access will be $50.

At CES 2009, several notebooks with built-in WiMax were shown. A number of manufacturers have begun offering laptops that are 4G compatible. With these services spreading over the USA, and hopefully soon - the world, more people will be able to enjoy wireless connectivity in a whole different and better way.
