Category: accessories
By: Morgan Jones

Priced at $49.95, it supports the Asus EeePC S101, 900, 900A and 901 can now all be fitted with the SaberTooth S4 SSD range

On the 8th of November, the Silicon Valley based manufacturer, Active Media Products Ltd (AMP) listed their new SaberTooth S4 SATA Mini PCIe SSDs on Amazon.com, starting at $49.95. AMP claim that their 'S4 supports exceptionally fast random and sequential read speeds and will give the fastest desktop hard drives a run for the money in bootup and application load times.'

The specifications, gleaned from AMPs website are as follows:

Read: 130MB/sec

Write: 50MB/sec

Capacities: 16 / 32 / 64 GB

Interface: SATA-II Mini PCIe

Dimensions: 2.7 x 1.3 inches (70 x 32 mm)

Compatibility: Asus EeePC S101, 900, 900A, 901, 1000

The 16GB SSD is listed on Amazon.com for $49.95, and the 32GB and 64GB SSDs are sold for $79.95 and $135.95 respectively. These drives are cheaper than AMP's older, but faster SaberTooth SS drives, which are almost double the price (the 16GB SSD is $98.95, the 32GB SSD is $125.95 and the 64GB SSD is $219.95). The SaberTooth SS drives can reach speeds of up to 135MB/s read and 100MB/sec write, and can fit the Asus EeePC S101, 900, 900A and 901.

Is it worth getting an S4 instead of the previous range, the S3? AMP sell the SaberTooth S3 32GB for $89.95, and the 64GB for $169.95, and the S3 has a significantly higher write speed of 70MB/sec, but a much lower read speed of 95MB/sec. It seems the S4 64GB does offer good value for money, in comparison with the other SaberTooth SSDs, but the S3 32GB may be a good choice for those seeking great write speeds at a reasonable price.
