ZiiLABS introduces ZMS-08

It offers high-performance and low-power consumtion

ZiiLABS introduced its ZMS-08 StemCell processor housed in a 13x13mm, 424-pin FBGA package. Reportedly, it is the world’s first 1080p Blu-Ray quality handheld media processor.

This third-generation mobile media CPU offers much more in comparison to its predecessor. Allegedly, by combining advanced ARM technology with its own media processing IP, ZiiLABS delivers high performance and low-power consumption.

"Combining advanced ARM technology with its own media processing IP has enabled ZiiLABS to deliver the high performance and low-power consumption required to enable the next leap in the mobile internet revolution" says Ian Drew, EVP Marketing, and ARM.

Among the new features of the ZMS-08 are the Blu-ray quality playback, new OpenGL ES 2.0, 720p simultaneous encode and decode of H.264 video, dual USB and HDMI controllers.

"Its new capabilities such as Blu-ray quality playback, 720p simultaneous encode and decode of H.264 video, accelerated OpenGL ES 2.0 and rich peripheral integration such as dual USB controllers and HDMI are blurring the boundary between the capabilities of the traditional PC and connected device." said Hock Leow, President of ZiiLABS.

Supposedly, the ZiiLABS’ ZMS-08 allows users to enjoy full HD video playback at 1080p directly to a 1080p TV by using the HDMI controller. In addition, accelerated graphics and enhanced audio and voice are available thanks to the OpenGL ES 2.0 and the included Xtreme Fidelity X-Fi audio technology.

Seemingly, the Zii-chip with its main 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 CPU will be housed in “web tablets, netbooks, connected TVs, video conferencing systems and home media hubs”.
The ZMS-08 is being tried out by “certain customers” and will ship in the first quarter of 2010.
