The Motorola Edge 40 Neo is the manufacturer's cheapest high-end model — but in view of its price, it can be classed more as a mid-range device. Even so, it has a lot to offer, as shown in our test.

144-Hz OLED with around 1,000 bits, 68-watt fast charging, IP68 certification, 60-fps gaming, WiFi 6E — these all sound like high-end phone specs. In fact, the Motorola Edge 40 Neo is a mid-range device which masters all of these features, and all this for a mere US$550 (for example on Amazon).

The Edge 40 Neo is basically the "light version" of Motorola's high-end collection, but it still brings with it a lot of its more expensive sibling's features. This means that this phone has the same main camera sensor as the much more expensive Edge 40 Pro. With this, the Edge 40 Neo can take really great photos for a mid-range phone and you can even record video in 4K — a real rarity within this price class.

Motorola hasn't skimped on the phone's storage either, giving it a generous 256 GB UFS 3.1 flash that is considerably faster than the usual ones on 500-dollar phones. Its screen is great, too: When depicting a full white screen, it reaches an average brightness of 957 cd/m², making it well-suited for depicting HDR content. Moreover, it boasts very accurate color depiction and quick reaction speeds.

The Motorola phone's 5,000 mAh battery allows for good runtimes, and thanks to its fast-charging charger, it is ready for action again in no time. Wireless charging may not be supported by the phone, but you wouldn't necessarily expect it to be able to do this at this price.

On the other hand, the device isn't entirely free of flaws: Case material transitions aren't terribly even at times and the phone lets out some quiet creaks if you try to bend it. It also only features inaccurate location services and it gets quite hot under load.

At the end of the day, the Motorola Edge 40 Neo offers great value for money. In our detailed review of the mid-range smartphone, you can read about what else we noticed about it. This includes all our benchmark results and tables featuring the results of our extensive tests.
