The announced OLED panel update for the Dell XPS 15 has already been delayed since March, and it now looks like those hoping for this display type on this particular performance laptop will have to wait even longer before making a purchase. However, there are signs that Dell could finally deliver the much-requested display option in June.

Unfortunately, for those waiting for the OLED display option to appear in Dell’s configurator for the XPS 15 range, April has come and gone. The OLED choice has started to become a bit of a mini-saga for the manufacturer and potential buyers. A Dell press release from January stated that OLED would start arriving on the XPS 15 by March, and when that didn’t happen XPS boss Frank Azor offered the news that April had become the new target.

May is here and still there is no option for shoppers to choose an OLED panel for their brand-new XPS 15 9570. But although there will be plenty who find this Dell failure rather frustrating, there is a potential silver lining to this particular gray cloud. It’s possible a pragmatic member of the marketing department suggested that why stick OLED on the configurator now, when there’s also 9th Gen Intel Core and GeForce GTX 16-series goodies to be had. It’s theorizing, but maybe Dell is finally preparing to unleash a fully refreshed Dell XPS 9580 upon the world.

There are some clues and reports that point to this happening and that it will likely occur in June. A lengthy post in Dell’s official blog specifically stated that the XPS 15 line will be receiving updates from Intel’s 9th Gen CPUs and Nvidia’s Turing-based GTX 16-series GPUs in June. We also, disappointingly, learned that Dell only plans to use the GeForce GTX 1650 model. However, looking on the bright side, it still means an 8-core GTX 16-series XPS 15 laptop is on the way.

Also, a recent interview between The Verge and Frank Azor threw up some more corroborating details. The OLED screen option is mentioned as is a June release. Lastly, a leaked Dell roadmap suggests there is a new Dell XPS 15 model in the works at about this time, although the scheduling has clearly altered from when the document was originally drawn up (February 2018). So an OLED-wielding 8-core GTX 1650-powered Dell XPS 15 (9580?) could be arriving in June – and hopefully it will be well worth the wait.
