The latest VR headsets from Oculus are available for pre-order right now with shipments beginning from May 21. The two headsets are targeted at different markets with the Quest an affordably priced all-in-one standalone VR gaming system that is completely wireless and builds everything users need to experience a 6DOF VR experience into the headset itself. The Rift S is a sequel to the original Oculus Rift and features some refinements to improve PC-powered VR gaming experiences.
The Oculus Quest is fitted with the fundamentally the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC found in high-end Android smartphones from 2017. Building on the Oculus VR experience for Samsung’s Gear VR, the Oculus Quest launches with 50 titles ready to go. Titles include Beat Saber, Creed, Journey of the Gods, Space Pirate Trainer and Sports Scramble.
The Oculus Rift S is compatible with all the titles already available for the original Rift. Both of the new headsets include Oculus Insight which gives users a glimpse of their physical environment while in the headset. The Rift S uses its additional camera hardware to level this up with Passthrough+ offering a mixed reality-like experience. It also features improved optics and a higher resolution display.
The Oculus Quest is retailing from US$399 while the Oculus Rift S also retails for US$399.
