Even with the Nintendo Switch 2 release date set for June 5th, some details about how to purchase the console are unclear. Best Buy has posted an update on its website, clarifying plans for late-night store openings. The retailer will use a ticket system to thwart scalpers. Additionally, there will be no online sales of consoles during launch week.
Some gamers may refer to it as a midnight launch, but Best Buy hours include late-night openings on June 4th in some U.S. time zones. The retailer has a list of participating locations to check which areas gamers can line up for the handheld. Buyers with a successful Switch 2 pre-order can arrive at the designated opening times to collect their purchases. Best Buy will also have a limited number of handhelds for other gamers, but doesn't mention quantities.
As expected, the retail chain will organize two lines during the Switch 2 launch event. One area is for Switch 2 pre-order pickups, while the other line is for customers who have not reserved a system. To prevent scalpers from walking away with multiple consoles, Best Buy will hand out tickets. Of course, these profiteers often find creative solutions to circumvent restrictions.
The last major console arrival was with the Xbox Series X/S and PS5 in November 2020. However, the Covid pandemic impacted in-person launch events. Retailers had no choice but to offer systems online, leading to constant battles with bots. That's not the case with the Switch 2, and Best Buy is joining GameStop with Switch 2 release date celebrations. Significantly, only games and accessories will be available on the Best Buy website.
All buyers, including those without a pre-order, may also receive a limited edition coin. The leaked images of the collectible aren't thrilling fans, but it will feature both Nintendo and Best Buy insignia.
