The Apple iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro Max will receive a completely redesigned chassis, which is made of aluminum instead of titanium. This is supposed to make the devices lighter, and the switch to aluminum also allows for better cooling. Moreover, Apple is now utilizing a vapor chamber, which is intended to dissipate heat from the processor more effectively in order to improve performance under sustained load, for example when gaming or editing videos.
40% faster under sustained load
Apple's latest flagship supposedly has the fastest processor of all smartphones on the market thanks to the brand-new Apple A19 Pro. According to Apple, the new chip also benefits from an improved cooling system and has up to 40% more performance under sustained load than the iPhone 16 Pro. Apple further advertises a better Dynamic Shield on both the front and back, the latter is expected to be 4x more drop-resistant than the predecessor.
Additionally, the display will be 3x more scratch-resistant and is also supposed to show fewer reflections due to the new display glass. With the Apple A19 Pro and a larger battery, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max apparently offer the longest battery life of any iPhone to date, and the model variants without a physical SIM card slot have a slightly larger battery.
Three 48MP main cameras and selfie-camera with square sensor
Apple has opted for a brand new 18MP selfie camera that is equipped with a square sensor. This allows users to take square photos and to choose between portrait and landscape images without turning the smartphone. For the first time, Apple is equipping all three rear cameras with 48MP sensors. The new f/2.8 telephoto camera has a 4x optical zoom, but thanks to digital zoom it can also record photos with 8x zoom at a resolution of 12MP.
The telephoto camera sensor is 56% larger than the previous model. Since Apple did not even mention the ultrawide and main cameras, they are probably not much different from the iPhone 16 Pro. The camera system can record 4K video at 120 frames per second as well as Dolby Vision HDR and ProRes Log. Videos can now also be recorded in ProRes RAW, which gives users even more flexibility when editing videos, but it also needs more storage.
