Apple has dominated a list of the most-shipped smartphones in 2020, with the iPhone 11 alone shipping 64.8 million units with an estimated value of around US$48.9 billion. Five iPhone models are in the top 10 list, joined by four Samsung Galaxy smartphones and a sole representative from Xiaomi in the form of the Redmi Note 9 Pro.

A top 10 list of the most-shipped smartphones of 2020 has been produced by research analysts Omdia (shared via PhoneArena). Like 2019, Apple has enjoyed huge shipping figures, with the iPhone 11 moving up from runner-up to the number one spot. According to the data, 64.8 million units of the iPhone 11 were shipped at an average selling price (ASP) of US$754, which leads to the immense value of US$48.9 billion. The iPhone 11 was far and away ahead of its nearest rival, which was the iPhone SE (2020) with 24.2 million units shipped.

Samsung Galaxy phones made a strong representation, but unlike Apple with its mostly flagship-level iPhones, Samsung had to rely on large shipments of midrange models to make an impact here. So while the ASPs of the iPhones ranged from US$451 right up to US$1,232, the Galaxy A smartphones sit at US$115-US$269. Samsung apparently shipped a very credible 74.8 million units of its four representatives here overall, but Apple's five iPhone models in the chart count for an incredible total of 143.6 million units shipped around the world.

It’s not all about Apple and Samsung though, as Xiaomi managed to creep into the top 10 thanks to the popularity of the Redmi Note 9 Pro. A figure of 15 million units shipped is given here, which at an ASP of US$161 gives a value of US$2.4 billion for the Chinese manufacturer. It’s still quite an accomplishment for both Xiaomi and its sub-brand Redmi to relax the stranglehold Samsung and Apple have over this particular arena.

The total value of the iPhones shipped according to the data in the table below amounts to an extraordinary US$112.9 billion, clearly showing just how valuable the Apple brand name is. Generally speaking, while Android smartphone shoppers looked for a cheaper option that offered reasonable performance for the price, Apple fans were still happy to pay out much higher prices for their next iPhone model.
