Some iPhone 11 and 12 owners complaining of color fading issues, other red iPhone models could be among those affected
Apple has been fond of using color to make its technology more attractive and engaging for consumers. The practice dates back to at least the colorful iMacs of the late 90s through to iPods and more recently its iPhones and iPads. Unfortunately, reports are coming in from users, primarily of the (Product) RED iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 models, that the colors are starting to fade in certain areas. Some iPhone SE 2 users are also complaining of similar issues.
According to a number of the people experiencing the issue first reported by Svetapple.sk, the iPhones concerned have been kept in cases. In at least one instance, this is the clear plastic case that Apple sells although it seems to have happened with other case types on too. At this stage, no one has been able to pinpoint what could be causing the problem although it appears it could be an issue that has existed since the iPhone XR was introduced, also in the (Product) RED line.
On reading about the story on Twitter, gadget render artist Ben Geskin posted that his wife’s iPhone SE 2 has also suffered from the same problem, also despite being kept in a case. For its part, Apple support hasn’t offered to replace devices affected by the problem as it appears to consider it a cosmetic issue and not a particular fault with the device itself. At this stage it seems the best course of action is to avoid getting a (Product) RED iPhone if this type of problem would concern you -- of course, this would be a true shame as part of the monies from sales of these models helps support worthwhile causes.
