Apple working on MagSafe wireless power bank charging accessory for iPhone 12
Apple’s MagSafe magnetic adapter tech built into the back of every iPhone 12 model has spawned some really interesting accessories. So far we’ve seen everything from MagSafe charging stands that charge and suspend an iPhone magnetically at the same time through to clever quick attach car vent mounts. Although we’ve also seen third-party battery pack accessories too, it looks like Apple is cooking up its own first-party MagSafe battery pack as well.
According to Macrumors’ Steve Moser, code in the iOS 14.5 beta 2 reveals that Apple is prepping a yet to be officially announced ‘Battery Pack’ that is not a battery case as in the past, but a MagSafe accessory. The charging accessory would presumably work over the Qi wireless charging protocol and would not charge the iPhone past the 90 percent mark. This would be to allow users to keep the pack attached without worrying about premature battery degradation that can come from repeatedly charging devices right up to 100 percent.
Apple is one of the few companies that has offered first-party battery accessories for its devices. The iPhone 12 has been criticized for its battery performance which went backwards compared to the iPhone 11. The addition of 5G connectivity has been identified as the primary culprit, although Apple did also fit the iPhone 12 range with lower capacity batteries than the previous generation. This new battery pack should help to ease any anxiety iPhone 12 users might have should they be away from a charging source for any period of time.
