Acer Predator Helios Neo 14 (2024) review: The portable RTX 4070 laptop with long runtimes

Acer's Helios Neo 14 is a powerful gaming laptop in a compact 14.5-inch format. Aside from gaming, this powerhouse's strengths include streaming and rendering. The necessary hardware is on board: Core i9, a GeForce RTX 4070, and 32 GB RAM. We already tested its larger 16-inch sister—the Helios Neo 16—several weeks ago. Competitors include devices such as the XMG Fusion 15 (Early 24), HP Omen Transcend 14, Razer Blade 14 2024 and the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 2024.

Case - Acer relies on a mix of materials
It seems that high-quality materials have only been used sparingly: Only the back of the laptop's lid is made from aluminum, and the rest is made from plastic. The angular case doesn't have any build flaws—the base unit and lid can be twisted ever so slightly. Applying pressure onto the back of the lid doesn't result in any image changes. Its maximum opening angle is about 155 degrees.
The majority of the case is matte black and only the fan outlets on the back feature a contrasting color, namely light gray. It doesn't have any LED strips and instead, keyboard backlighting (RGB) and the illuminated Predator logo on the back bring some color into the mix.
Among the 14-inch laptops in this comparison, the Neo 14 is the bulkiest—together with the Blade 14, our test sample weighs the most. If compactness and weight are deciding factors for you, then you won't be able to avoid the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14.
Connectivity - The Helios Neo with Thunderbolt 4 including Power Delivery
Two USB-A ports (USB 3.2 Gen 2) and two USB-C ports (1x Thunderbolt 4, 1x USB 3.2 Gen 2) are on this laptop. The latter both support Power Delivery and DP Alt Mode. In total, there are three video outputs (HDMI, 2x DP) and an audio jack rounds out the device's offerings. All connections are located centrally on the right and left side of the laptop. This means cables should stay out of your way when using the hand rests. A notable positive is that there is a USB-A and USB-C port on each side of the device.
SD Card Reader
We are a little confused as to why Acer has installed a microSD card reader that only delivers very low transfer rates (reference card: AV PRO microSD 128 GB V60). The competition from Asus shows how it's meant to be done.

Communication
The wireless module uses a WiFi 6E chip (AX211) from Intel which goes by the name "Killer AX1675i". "Killer" is Intel's brand for gaming-optimized network controllers. No surprise: under optimal conditions (no WiFi devices in close vicinity, short distance between laptop and server PC), it achieves very good data rates. Acer hasn't equipped the Neo with a Gigabit Ethernet port.
Webcam
Its webcam (2.1 MP) delivers a picture quality on par with the competition. It doesn't have a mechanical cover.

Accessories
Aside from the usual documents (quick-start guide, warranty information), the laptop doesn't come with any additional accessories.
Maintenance
It's a little tricky to disassemble the bottom plate: After removing all of the screws on the bottom, the plastic strip attached behind the display on the top of the laptop is loosened. Be careful, as there are lots of small plastic hooks that can easily break. The base plate can then be loosened using a pick or a flat spatula. Again, be careful: the rear air outlets are also part of the bottom case. You can subsequently access the SSD (PCIe 4, M.2-2280), the WiFi module including its antennas, the fans and the battery. There are no memory banks. The RAM is permanently soldered on.
Sustainability
The laptop's packaging doesn't consist of all too much plastic: The power supply is inside a transparent bag and the laptop sits inside a fiber bag made of PET. There is also an insert (PP) to protect the display. A cardboard frame protects the device from being knocked during transit. The cardboard box and all cardboard parts are made from recycled materials. You can carry out repairs thanks to the base plate being removable—the entire hardware is then accessible. Software updates should not be a problem for years to come.
Warranty
The Acer laptop is covered by a standard 12-month warranty as long as it was purchased in the United States. You can extend this to up to three years for a surcharge.
Input devices - The Acer keyboard with three backlighting zones
Keyboard
The installed chiclet keyboard features even keys which have a short travel and a clear pressure point. The keys' resistance is fine. We noted that the keyboard wobbles ever so slightly when you type on it, but this shouldn't get in the way during everyday use. A positive is that it comes with regular-sized arrow keys. The RGB backlighting has three zones and four brightness levels.
Touchpad
Display - Bright IPS panel with sRGB coverage
Acer has equipped its Neo laptop with a somewhat unusual screen: It has a diameter of 14.5 inches with a resolution of 3,072 x 1,920 pixels—with a work-friendly aspect ratio of 16:10. G-Sync, the absence of PWM flickering, short response times and high luminosity all speak in favor of the matte 165 Hz panel. Its contrast just meets the target value. It is perfectly possible to read from the screen outdoors. However, just make sure the sun isn't shining too brightly.

* ... smaller is better
The screen already has a good color depiction straight out of the box, which we were able to further improve through our own calibration: As a result, its color deviations sank from 2.26 to 1.21 (target: DeltaE < 3). The panel can depict the sRGB space in almost its entirety, whereas the same can't be said for AdobeRGB or DCI P3. In this respect, the competition often has more to offer.
You can download and use our color profile for free. The link can be found in the info box of the display.

Performance - The Predator uses Meteor Lake and Ada Lovelace
The Neo 14 is aimed at users who are looking for a portable, powerful laptop that is compact in size. The required power is delivered by Meteor Lake (Core Ultra 7, Core Ultra 9) and Ada Lovelace (RTX 4060, RTX 4070). Our test sample is the top-of-the-range model featuring a Core Ultra 9 185H, GeForce RTX 4070 and 32 GB RAM. It currently retails for around US$2,300 and prices start at about US$1,900.
Testing conditions
There are four system modes to choose from when connected to the mains and two in battery mode (see table). The modes performance (benchmarks) and eco (battery tests) were used during our test. Turbo and performance require a battery charge level of at least 40 %. Otherwise, only the balanced mode can be used. Switching between the modes is done via a button (above the keyboard) or via the PredatorSense software (the laptop's control center). An LED indicates the active mode.

Processor
The Core Ultra 9 185H and Core Ultra 7 155H are available to choose from within the Neo 14 series—our test device is equipped with the nominally more powerful Meteor Lake CPU. A higher TDP (45 watts vs. 28 watts) enables slightly higher clock rates—both CPUs have 16 cores (6P, 8E, 2LPE; 22 threads). The Ultra 9 achieved test results on par with the CPU's average: Three system modes (performance, turbo, balanced) delivered almost identical results, whereas quiet resulted in slightly lower values.
The CB15 loop showed a curious progression: From the first to the third run, its performance dropped slightly and then remained at a stable level. After the thirteenth run, it reached the original level again and then maintained this permanently.

Graphics card
Within the RTX 4000 lineup, the GeForce RTX 4070 (4,608 shaders, 128-bit bus, fast GDDR6 RAM) represents the sweet spot. Acer allows it a maximum TGP of 125 watts, meaning it remains below the maximum value specified by Nvidia (140 watts). At 8 GB, its VRAM may be a little tight for the next few years. The number of games with higher memory requirements is likely to increase. Its benchmark results were below the RTX 4070 average. Turbo provided a clear increase. Switching between dGPU and Optimus doesn't require a restart, as the laptop supports Advanced Optimus.

Gaming performance
The frame rates we measured were below the RTX 4070 average (performance), whereas turbo resulted in a plus. The screen's native resolution (3,072 x 1,920 pixels) is often exhausted: 3K gaming at high to maximum settings is possible. Higher resolutions, including ray tracing, require the use of frame generation and DLSS 3—however, these functions must be explicitly supported by a game.
The following table provides frame rates of some games at native screen resolution and the respective maximum settings that we used for the individual games.

Emissions - The compact Acer laptop heats up a lot
Noise emissions
No surprise: Powerful hardware inside a compact laptop results in quite a high noise level. The sound level rises to up to 56 dB(A) (turbo) or 50 dB(A) (performance) when gaming. The modes balanced and quiet result in significantly more moderate values—at the expense of some performance. During everyday use (office, internet) and when idle, the fans generally run at a low speed at all times.

Stress test
The extreme stress test scenario (Prime95 and Furmark in continuous operation) checks the system's stability under full load. The CPU and GPU ran through the test with fluctuating clock rates at a medium to high level.
Speakers
Like so many other laptop speakers, the Neo 14's models also lack bass. Otherwise, they produce quite a decent sound. A better sound experience could be achieved by connecting headphones or external speakers.

Power management - The Neo 14 delivers very good runtimes
Power consumption
The laptop didn't show any conspicuous power consumption values during our test. They were normal for the installed hardware. The stress test and Cyperpunk 2077 were run with fluctuating power consumption—the curves reflect the clock rates we measured quite well. The 230-watt power supply is still sufficient in size. The adapter copes with short-term load peaks without any problems.

Runtimes
In combination with eco mode, the Neo's 76-Wh battery gives it very good runtimes: During the WiFi test (calling up websites using a script) and video test (short film Big Buck Bunny (H.264 encoding, FHD) in a loop), it managed runtimes of 8:39 h and 9:15 h respectively. Unfortunately, however, the Neo can't come close to the values of the Asus G14.

Pros
Cons
Verdict - A portable powerhouse
The potent hardware inside the Neo 14 is capable of delivering permanently high performance levels. At the same time, the laptop boasts great portability thanks to its compactness, moderate weight as well as its super impressive runtimes (WiFi > 8 h).
The Acer Predator Helios Neo 14 (2024) delivers what it promised: It is a portable, powerful laptop for gamers and creators.
High emissions can't be avoided: The laptop gets noticeably warm and produces a lot of noise. Much more comfortable values would come at the cost of the device's performance—but even then, this wouldn't prevent you from still being able to use it for gaming.
Features that speak for the Neo 14 include its matte and bright 14.5-inch display (3,072 x 1,920 pixels, IPS, 165 Hz, sRGB, G-Sync) in a work-friendly 16:10 aspect ratio as well as its two USB-C ports that support Power Delivery—this means you'd be able to leave the bulky proprietary Acer power supply (230 watts) at home. Its weaknesses: It only has one SSD slot, soldered-on RAM that can't be expanded, and a slow card reader.
One alternative could be the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14. It offers comparable performance, while additionally benefitting from an OLED panel and even better runtimes.
Price and availability
