The Exynos Galaxy S20 and S20+ don't use the same main camera sensor as the Snapdragon models

The Samsung Galaxy S20 series officially went on sale yesterday. Having the phone in the hands of the public means more specific information on the phones starts being revealed, and the latest of those may not thrill buyers of the global model of the Galaxy S20 and S20+.

Apparently, as revealed by leakster Ice Universe, the Exynos and Snapdragon models of the Galaxy S20 and S20+ use different main sensors. It was revealed way before launch that the Galaxy S20 and S20+ would use a new 12 MP sensor as their main shooters. That sensor, the Sony IMX555, has a 1/1.76" physical size, and a 1.8μm pixel size. However, usage of that sensor appears to be limited to the Snapdragon models of the phones.

The Exynos models apparently use a different sensor—one made by Samsung, the ISOCELL S5K2LD. Fear not, though, as this sensor also has the same 12 MP resolution and 1.8μm pixel size as the Sony IMX555 on Snapdragon models.

While it's always annoying to find out more differences across models of the same phone, there's no solid evidence indicating that the ISOCELL S5K2LD on the Exynos models performs worse than the IMX555 on the Snapdragon units. This isn't the first time Samsung has done something similar either, so it shouldn't be a problem. In fact, the Galaxy S10 series all feature ISOCELL main sensors.

While public opinion leans towards Sony's Exmor sensors being better than Samsung's ISOCELL alternatives, there's little at the moment proving any disparity across the sensors on the two S20 models.
