New Apple M2 Ultra, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13 details emerge

The dust has barely settled on the M1 Ultra, but 9to5Mac already claims to have received information about Apple's next-generation silicon. Reportedly, the company is not only working on the Apple M2, but also the M2 Pro, M2 Max and the M2 Ultra. While it is unclear when the M2 Ultra will arrive, 9to5Mac asserts that the SoC will feature 24 CPU cores, up from 20 in the M1 Ultra.

Additionally, 9to5Mac claims that Apple will launch next-generation MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13 laptops with Apple M2 SoCs later this year. Citing 'reliable sources', the website acknowledges that its information conflicts with a recent report from Ming-Chi Kuo, who believes that the next MacBook Air will have an updated Apple M1 instead. Reputedly, Apple has codenamed this year's MacBook Air 'J413' and will only sell it with the Apple M2.

Similarly, 9to5Mac insists that Apple will restrict this year's MacBook Pro 13 to its entry-level Apple M2 SoC. The website contends that the machine, codenamed 'J493' will utilise the current model's design, despite evidence to the contrary having emerged.

Incidentally, 9to5Mac adds that Apple has considered returning to the MacBook name, which it ceased in February 2012, before bringing it back for four years with the 12-inch model. Supposedly, Apple could re-name the MacBook Pro 13 as the MacBook, although this may not happen this year. Currently, expectations are that Apple will release new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13 models at WWDC 2022 in June.
