Yamaha launches the NEO's, a 50cc equivalent electric scooter

Yamaha has launched the NEO's electric scooter, which has power equivalent to a 50cc vehicle. The scooter has a 2.3 kW direct drive hub-mounted motor with Yamaha's latest integrated power unit. This design removes the need for gears or belts while ensuring strong acceleration.

The scooter is powered by a 50.4 V lithium-ion battery, delivering up to 23 miles (37 km) of range. You can double the NEO's range by installing an optional second battery. The ~18 lbs (8 kg) battery is removable so that it can be swapped or charged. A full charge can take up to eight hours, with a 20-80% charge taking four hours.

The vehicle has two ride modes: STD, a standard mode and ECO, which reduces battery consumption and extends the range up to 24 miles (38.5 km). The NEO's has a Smart Key keyless system, so you can start the scooter as long as the key is nearby, perhaps in a bag or pocket. The EV has full LED lighting, including twin-eye headlights, a taillight and turn signals.

The NEO's features an LCD instrument display, which will inform you of the vehicle's charge level. Riders can use the Yamaha MyRide app to pair a smartphone with the scooter so that the display can also show notifications such as incoming calls. Plus, you can use the app to view statistics about your ride.

The Yamaha NEO's scooter starts at ~US$3,663 (€3,324) and is available in either Milky White or Midnight Black. The vehicle, which is due to ship in June, will be the first electric scooter from Yamaha to be available to European customers.
