DxOMark, a respected camera quality assessment organization owned by DxO Labs, has run the new iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus through a series of camera tests. They awarded the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus scores of 92 and 94 respectively, putting the phones in first and second place on the leaderboard of the newly modified test suite. DxOMark claims that these are the best smartphone cameras they have ever tested, besting the previous top dogs, the Google Pixel and HTC U11, which both scored 90 points when retested in the new rundown.
Their procedure is an extensive suite of tests which include taking 1500 photos and two hours of video in a range of conditions from perfect lighting, to low light, high dynamic range, motion and more. The tests also include laboratory style photos to compare technical performance on set patterns and known colors. The scores in the new suite can’t be directly compared to the old suite due to the addition of categories for bokeh, zoom, and improved low-light tests among other additions. There is no longer a leaderboard for the past results either, but the original reviews can be found using the search function.
The strongest areas for the camera were:
- Exposure & Contrast
- Color
- Flash
DxOMark concludes “Overall, the Apple iPhone 8 Plus is an excellent choice for the needs of nearly every smartphone photographer. It features outstanding image quality, zoom for those needing to get closer to their subjects, and an industry-leading Portrait mode for artistic efforts. It is at the top of our scoring charts in nearly every category — and in particular, its advanced software allows it to do an amazing job of capturing high-dynamic range scenes and images in which it can recognize faces.”
