According to a new rumour, Apple will not be launching its next mid-range iPhone as the iPhone SE 4. Instead, we may see the introduction of a device called the iPhone 16e, much like the iPhone 5c and iPhone XR of yesteryear.

Rumours about Apple releasing a fourth-generation iPhone SE have been rumbling along for a while at this point. For reference, details about a prospective iPhone SE 4 emerged over two years ago when it was still referred to as the iPhone SE 2023. Apple has remained steadfast in selling the iPhone SE (2022) (curr. $184.95 - renewed on Amazon) though, despite its many shortcomings compared to other modern iPhones.

Ultimately, a new iPhone SE is akin to vapourware at this point. To that end, a new rumour now suggests that Apple could do away with the 'SE' branding altogether. In fact, Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital claims to have received information that the device may arrive as the 'iPhone 16e' instead.

Unfortunately, it remains to be seen what the 'e' stands for at this stage. Nonetheless, it would follow in the footsteps of the iPhone 5c and iPhone XR in being an adjunct to current generation iPhones sold at a cheaper price point. Based on recent rumours, the iPhone 16e will serve as a quasi-parts bin device when it debuts in spring 2025 with hardware from various recent flagship iPhones.
