A new Sensor Tower report for 2Q2020 concludes that Zoom took the title for most downloaded from iOS' App Store over those 3 months. This was found to be the case in the US market as well as for the global Apple-device sphere. The video-conferencing software took this #1 spot away from TikTok, who held the record for most downloaded onto iPhones or iPads in 1Q2020.
Zoom's success was attributed to the effects of Covid-19 on interprofessional communication and collaboration. In fact, of the top 10 iOS apps for the quarter, 6 of them (Zoom, Facebook, Google Meet, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Microsoft Teams) could be said to have this kind of use-case.
Then again, there was evidence that Zoom also took over as a general go-to consumer-grade video-calling app in 2Q2020. Similarly, 'pro-social-distancing' App Store categories such as gaming, health and education grew by 33%, 58% and 84% respectively compared to pre-lockdown times, whereas the Navigation and Travel (ride-sharing apps included) groups fell by 30% and 62% respectively.
