After the ZimaBoard 2 was previously only available for testers or could only be pre-ordered via a crowdfunding campaign, manufacturer IceWhale has now announced the start of deliveries. Meanwhile, its own home server operating system, ZimaOS, has undergone numerous upgrades in recent months and weeks.

We were one of the lucky few who were able to review the ZimaBoard 2 in advance. In the past, we also reviewed the manufacturer's first ZimaBoard, the ZimaBlade and the significantly larger ZimaCube.

On September 2, ZimaBoard manufacturer IceWhale proudly announced that it had begun shipping the ZimaBoard 2 to customers. The manufacturer thanked the entire community for its support on the project and announced that the first 1,000 units of the ZimaBoard 2 1664 are currently being shipped.

Those who ordered the small x86 SBC home server and are among the first 1,000 pre-orderers should check their email inbox; IceWhale has sent these customers a tracking number. All further orders are scheduled to ship in early October.

In the meantime, not only has the hardware been further optimized for the launch, but a lot has also been done with the software. The developers are constantly working on their lightweight home server OS version, ZimaOS, based on CasaOS. It now significantly surpasses the original CasaOS in terms of functionality while still maintaining its lightweight design.

The latest version, ZimaOS v1.4.4, has just been released and focuses on stability, reliability and user-friendliness. This includes the elimination of several bugs, optimized performance, and practical new features such as One-Tap Reset (reset system and apps while preserving data) and RAID1 Repair (a new repair option for corrupted RAID1 arrays → increased data security) that make the NAS experience more robust and easier.

The previous update at the beginning of August included a host of new features, including the new 3-2-1 backup, which supports backups to LAN storage, cloud drives, USB and Zima devices. Incremental backups, version control, and parallel tasks have been added since then. Further additions include support for JBOD and RAID6, and a new interface for creating storage, while device information is now visible in the settings, SSL certificates are available for more secure access, and apps launch with tips and a password prompt.

The last version already included various performance optimizations: app management was optimized to reduce resource consumption by 20%, app downloads are up to 58% faster, and app initialization is significantly faster after a restart.

IceWhale is working diligently on ZimaOS: users can expect continuous updates, some of which are initiated by the community. The manufacturer has recorded over 900,000 downloads of the operating system, and its Discord server now boasts more than 29,000 members. The ZimaBoard 2 can be ordered here.
