Xiaomi has unveiled a new in-ear communication device which will soon begin crowdfunding in China. The Chinese name machine translates into English as the Xiaomi Public Network Intercom Mini. Suggested applications include hospitality, beauty salons or dental practices.
The Xiaomi Public Network Intercom Mini appears to be a Push to Talk Over Cellular (PTTOC or POC) device for one-to-one or one-to-many communications. A built-in SIM provides support for the national Chinese 4G network with up to 5,000 km (~3,107 miles) range. It is worth noting that data is only free for the first year, and that the gadget cannot work without a network connection.
According to Xiaomi, you can quickly connect multiple units when they are nearby, with further controls available via the Xiaomi app. The gadget has a small, lightweight body weighing 35g (~1.2 oz), and it can be clipped onto your clothing. The accompanying wired earpiece has a hook design, weighs 11g (~0.4 oz) and can be worn on the right or left ear. Thanks to a 470 mah battery, which recharges via USB-C, the device is said to last for up to 43 hours on standby or run for 25 hours with typical use.
Backers will be asked to pledge CNY 179 (~$24) to the Xiaomi Youpin crowdfunding campaign when it starts on January 7th, with shipping due to begin on January 15th. The Xiaomi Public Network Intercom Mini is then expected to retail for CNY 199 (~$27). It is unclear whether or when the device could reach markets like North America, where you can buy other Xiaomi wearables like the Smart Band 9 (curr. $47.70 at Amazon).
