The electronics OEM Xiaomi held a conference today (September 9, 2019) in China for its latest developments in mobile-device tech. This show was dominated by the launch of Mi Charge Turbo, a new and apparently super-fast wireless charging standard with a rate of 30W. For context, the next fastest form of wireless charging is a 20W modality found in the early-2019 Mi 9 flagship.
Xiaomi claims that Mi Charge Turbo 30W can outstrip this form of wireless charging, as well as the 27W wired standard also found in the Mi 9, while charging a 4000mAh battery from 0% to 100%. Then again, this is a result of internal testing and may not pan out in the real world. On the other hand, it is still an impressive feat for a form of charging that, while fashionable, is still held back by poor speeds and, thus, reduced convenience.
The OEM also announced that Mi Charge Turbo 30W will be first available in the upcoming Mi 9 5G, as well as a range of appropriately powered accessories. It also mentioned that this phone will also be capable of reverse wireless charging as a result. The rate at which this feature will work was not specified, although Xiaomi claims that it can charge an iPhone XS by 30% in 30 minutes. That was not all, though: the company also announced that a 40W version of Mi Charge Turbo is also on the way.
