Xiaomi's first electric car won't be cheap like its Redmi phones but the SU7 price range matches its specs
The dream specs of Xiaomi's first electric SU7 sedan - acceleration in under 3 seconds and fast 800V charging architecture - make it a direct competitor to the Tesla Model S. Just like Tesla's performance sedan, however, the Xiaomi SU7 won't come cheap like the company's affordable line of Redmi phones.
Xiaomi SU7 EV price
- SU7 RWD: $35,200
- SU7 AWD: $55,000
Powered by an expensive high-nickel 101 kWh battery made by CATL, and equipped with all the bells and whistles of a top-end EV, the price of Xiaomi SU7's top trim is likely to be north of $50,000. A local insurance company insider disclosed that this is how much the SU7 AWD with 495kW (664 hp) will be valued at.
The base Xiaomi SU7 RWD trim with 73.6kWh BYD LFP battery battery and 220kW (295 hp) output from its single motor will be much cheaper, though, starting at about $35,200.
Xiaomi has based the SU7 on an internally developed 800V electric vehicle architecture that it calls Modena, and has anointed it with its own Hyper OS for the smart functions and connectivity. The car will have self-driving functionality with input from numerous high resolution cameras, and even LiDAR as well as ultrasonic sensors, components that Tesla moved away from to save on manufacturing costs. All that jazz isn't coming at the usual from Xiaomi's home turf midrange pricing, but $35,000-$50,000 is still not too shabby for a modern EV assembled with a novel Hypercasting method that is as fast and smart as they come in this price range. Xiaomi is pretty serious about its newly minted car business, too, as the SU7 has been developed by a team of 3,400 engineers and a continuous investment of $10 billion in R&D expenses.
