Xiaomi SU7 electric car specs previewed with 500-mile range version at a top price and 2024 release date
The world's third largest phone maker just took to the airwaves to announce its first electric car, the Xiaomi SU7 performance sedan with up to 1200 km (750 miles) range on the generous CLTC cycle, so most likely a 525-mile affair on the EPA range test. That's with a big 150 kWh battery, though, and this Pro version won't be coming before 2025, while NIO already tested its own 600-mile range EV with 150 kWh semi solid-state battery in highway driving scenario recently.
Xiaomi SU7 price and colors
The Xiaomi SU7 and SU7 Max, on the other hand, are entering imminent production as soon as this month and will be available for purchase in 2024. They will carry the Mi branding known from Xiaomi's phones, and come in Aqua Blue, Mineral Gray, and Verdant Green colors.
As for the retail Xiaomi SU7 price, the CEO stayed mum on stage but before the announcement they hinted that it would be somewhat expensive. No wonder, given the SU7 sedan specs.
Xiaomi SU7 specs
Xiaomi has developed its own EV architecture called Modena, with a modern 800V powertrain and a cell-to-pack body that incorporates the battery into the chassis. The car will be assembled in BAC's factories with a gigacasting method similar to what Tesla uses, and which Xiaomi calls Hypercasting.
The two initial battery pack options - 73.6kWh BYD LFP battery and an integrated 101 kWh high-nickel pack by CATL - will be good for about 800km (500 miles) on a charge. Again, that is on China's overly generous CLTC cycle which typically gets cut by a third by the EPA in the US when an EV goes through its grueling range grind.
The Xiaomi SU7 has RWD and AWD versions with a a single 220kW (295 hp) motor and dual 495kW (664 hp) combined output motors, respectively, and up to 265 kmph top speed. The so-called Xiaomi HyperEngine motors can spin at up to 21,000 rpm and propel the top trim from 0-60 mph in 2.78 seconds.
Xiaomi will be decking the SU7 with all the modern smart EV functions one can imagine, including autonomous driving aided by high-res cameras, LiDAR, radar, and even ultrasonic sensors. The smart cabin's interface will run on Xiaomi's Hyper OS and about the only thing left to learn about the Xiaomi SU7 is its exact price range.
