Xiaomi recycles the Redmi K40 with the Redmi K40S, a mid-range smartphone that shares many features with the Redmi K50
Xiaomi has returned to the Redmi K40 with the Redmi K40S, a smartphone launched alongside the Redmi K50 and Redmi K50 Pro. As expected, the Redmi K40S shares many of its specifications with the Redmi K40, which launched last year. In fact, it seems that Xiaomi has only made two changes from the Redmi K40 to the Redmi K40S.
As far as we can tell, Xiaomi will offer the Redmi K40S in a new green colourway. However, the aurora, black and white colours from last year return. Additionally, Xiaomi has optically stabilised the Redmi K40S' primary camera, a feature that the Redmi K40 lacks. Still, the Sony IMX582 from the Redmi K40 remains, a 48 MP sensor that also has an f/1.8 aperture.
Moreover, the Redmi K40S features an 8 MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a 2 MP macro lens and a 20 MP front-facing camera. In other words, the Redmi K40S and Redmi K50 have identical cameras. Elsewhere, the Snapdragon 870 from the Redmi K40 makes another appearance, as does the 4,500 mAh battery that supports 67 W fast charging and Samsung's E4 AMOLED display. The 120 Hz panel also operates natively at 1080p and offers 1,300 nits of peak brightness, among other features.
The Redmi K40S starts at CNY 1,799 (~US$283) with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. According to Xiaomi's website, all colourways are available across the Redmi K40S' four memory configurations, which peak at 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. The Redmi K40S will be available in the following configurations and prices:
- 6 GB of RAM/128 GB of storage - CNY 1,799 (~US$283)
- 8 GB of RAM/128 GB of storage - CNY 1,999 (~US$315)
