Xiaomi raises the wireless fast charging bar to 80 Watts for upcoming smartphones
One area of smartphone technology where Chinese smartphone makers have been absolutely relentless in developing is battery fast charging. A case in point is Xiaomi. Its Mi 10 Ultra only hit the market last month with 120 W wired charging and 50 W wireless charging. Apple, for example, only just launched the iPhone 12 line with support for 15 W wireless charging for the first time last week.
Fast forward just a month from the release of the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra and Xiaomi has just unveiled its latest breakthrough in wireless fast charging ramping things up to an astounding 80 W. Xiaomi’s 80W Mi Wireless Charging Technology is capable of filling a 4,000 mAh battery to 10% in 1 minute, 50% in 8 minutes and 100% in just 19 minutes. By comparison, its 30W Mi Wireless Charging Technology from 2019 could charge a similar battery to 50% in about 25 minutes, and 100% in 69 minutes.
Xiaomi is quick to highlight that it has been carrying the torch of wireless fast charging progress by being the first to introduce 40 W wireless charging as recently as March 2020, before raising this to 50 W for the Mi 10 Ultra and then raising the bar once again to 80 W in its latest incarnation. If the new wireless charging technology appears in a shipping smartphone before the end of the year, Xiaomi will have raised the bar on wireless fast charging three times in just twelve months.
