Reviews for the Xiaomi Redmi 12
The Xiaomi Redmi 12 is an inexpensive mid-range phone that's water resistant and offers good everyday performance. A highlight could include its camera which is fitted with wide-angle and macro lenses - but costing under US$200, is the phone really capable of taking great photos?

Xiaomi makes great smartphones in the mid-range sector that seem to feature high-end specs and new smartphones. Speaking of both these devices, there are a lot of things worth appreciable such as the high capacity battery, slim design, latest Android version, and multiple color options. The smartphones arrive at a price tag that is friendly for users to invest in but still, there are some downsides on both the devices. The display section feels average especially when we talk about the 5G variant as per pricing. On the 4G variant, the performance feels quite underwhelming. Since the device caters to budget segment users we can’t expect much from a smartphone in this range. However, it can’t be overlooked that alternatives with the same price tag arrive with a better set of specs and value-for-money proposals. The Redmi 12 4G and 5G variants are good for general usage but if you are looking for a value-for-money deal, then check out the Honor 90 Lite as an alternative option that comes with almost similar specifications and in the same price range.

The Redmi 12 5G is a good budget offering from the brand that checks most of the basic boxes, including a large battery, 5G connectivity, a decent display, and a conventional design. Remember that this smartphone is priced starting at Rs. 11,999, and it does get the job done. People looking for an entry-level 5G smartphone can opt for this model but if display and cameras are very important to you, the Redmi Note 12 5G would make a lot more sense for a bit more money.

The Xiaomi Redmi 12 5G’s battery performance ranked toward the bottom of the DXOMARK database. The device is equipped with a 5000 mAh battery and a Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 chip. However, the global autonomy experience demonstrated a lot of possibilities for improvement. When used moderately, the autonomy of Xiaomi Redmi 12 5G lasted a little bit less than two and a half days, giving it a below-average showing in our database. The weak showing in autonomy could be attributed to the relatively high night discharge current, which resulted in the device losing more than 3% of its power per night. Furthermore, the high consumption of social apps and gaming drained the battery quickly as well. On a brighter side, the device showed above-average autonomy in video streaming 4G and calling test cases. The Xiaomi Redmi 12 5G’s charging experience leaves much room for optimization.

The Redmi 12 5G impresses with its combination of premium fit and finish, large display, decent performance, and a sizable battery, all at an affordable price. The camera performance is passable and certainly acceptable for the price but it's the software experience that leaves a lot to be desired. Overall, we think the Redmi 12 5G is worth considering for those shopping on a tight budget for an undemanding user.

The Redmi 12 5G is definitely a great option for someone who is looking for an stylish all-rounder 5G phone in budget. You get a nice display, a decent camera and a capable chipset that offers good day to day performance. Moreover, the 5000mAh battery delivers great battery backup. The bloatware and 18W charging speed are a bit letdown, but I don’t find that as a deal breaker at all. All in all, Redmi 12 5G is worth taking a look at if you are looking for a 5G smartphone under 12K.

The Redmi 12 5G is in a 5G zone of its own when it comes to budget 5G smartphones, at the time of writing, rivaled only by its very similar specced sibling, the Poco M6 Pro. That apart, there are a few other players with devices at similar price points, but none which can match what the Redmi 12 5G brings to the table. If you are on a very tight budget and looking for a phone that not only connects you to a 5G network but also lets you experience it at its best, then the Redmi 12 5G is a no-brainer. You not only get 5G connectivity but also a good display, a powerful processor for its price, plenty of storage, and decent battery life with a charger in the box for good measure. There’s nothing quite like it at the time of writing, which is why we think this could be the phone ambassador 5G in India needs.

The Redmi 12 5G is all about making 5G accessible to the masses. It has a minimalist design, large screen that's good for streaming content, a 5000mAh battery that easily lasts a day and a half, and a 3.5mm jack and MicroSD slot to extend storage. The hardware is decent enough, and you even get IP53 ingress protection. There are inherent limitations here — like the lack of a wide-angle lens and 18W charging — but on the whole, the positives outweigh the cons by a sizeable margin. If you're in need of an entry-level 5G phone that offers good value for money, look no further.

Redmi 12 is definitely a promising budget phone with all-rounder specs under 10K. It might lack behind in terms of gaming but performs well in every other scenario. The simple yet modern design, the good big display, and the 5000mAh battery do a good job. The camera quality is also good for the price. On the other hand, the charging speed could have been better, and the bloatware can be reduced. All in all, I’m quite impressed with the Redmi 12 and it gets a big thumbs up from me.

All in all, the Redmi 12 5G is a remarkable phone for its price range — it’s actually among the cheapest 5G options in India. It has a sleek design, a smooth performance, and great camera quality. The only thing I did not enjoy was the software experience, but that is a matter of personal preference. If you are looking for a 5G phone on a tight budget, the Redmi 12 5G is an obvious choice.

So overall, after going through rigorous testing and usage, the Redmi 12 5G feels worth the price. In fact, for a smartphone that starts at under ₹11,000, this is a superb deal! We get a nice and premium design with a huge display, we get a fairly powerful and very efficient chip, and a long-lasting battery backup. Yes, the charging is slow and the camera misses here and there, but at just ₹10,999, I’m not complaining at all! The smartphone aims to make 5G more accessible to all smartphone users in the country and that, it does with great style and poise. This, after quite some time, feels like Xiaomi doing what the brand does best, making new technology more accessible to facilitate mass adaptation. So yes, if you are in the market for an entry-level 5G smartphone, the Redmi 12 5G is probably the best option under a ₹12,000 budget.

In terms of software, the Redmi 12 5G boots the latest MIUI 14 based on Android 13. The software does offer many customisation and personalisation options. However, there are a few bloatware apps preinstalled. Other specifications include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, AI-based facial recognition, an IR emitter, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity.

So, should you buy the Redmi 12 5G? If you have strict budget constraints and want a phone that offers 5G connectivity with smooth overall performance and decent cameras, this is a good option. The Pastel Blue colour would appeal to people who want something different while the Moonshine Silver colour is great at hiding those smudges that form at the glass back panel.

It is a small display format for smartphones. You shouldn't be severely defective in vision, and you won't see much detail on the screen and only have a small resolution available. For that, the device should be small and handy, easy to transport.

68.8%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
