The Xiaomi Black Shark gaming phone offers a water-cooling system, a metal case in an industrial design, and an optional gamepad. Should gamers get misty-eyed about this phone or will only eccentrics import it from China? Find out in our review.

For just over £400, the Black Shark is among the most powerful and well-equipped devices to date. It's got a relatively clean software experience, great battery life and a useful gaming mode to keep you focused on play. It's not the perfect phone though – even at this price point.

The Xiaomi Black Shark may not be the best at much, but it is a stunning deal for the price. As a gaming machine it will leave most satisfied, and as a phone it competes with the best of the best.

On the basis of the previous model of black shark, the Black Shark Helo has made many improvements in appearance, lighting effect, external release, heat dissipation, etc., which also makes it a more balanced and excellent game phone. If you are a gamer, the Black Shark Helo is still a cost-effective option.

The Black Shark gaming phone did provide an amazing gaming experience. The graphics were great and the company was able to include features that aids in better game-play. Although I’m sure that some people might complain how the controller is one-sided, it will still depend on the user’s preference. The device’s camera was also decent, admittedly better than some smartphones. What are your thoughts on the Black Shark Gaming Phone? Let me know in the comments.

Xiaomi Black Shark 2
While the flagships interest most of the smartphone users out there, there is a growing number of users who prefer gaming centric phones. The Xiaomi Black Shark 2 is an update to last years Black Shark. For a start, the phone looks more “gaming” than ever. The entire back shouts gaming but not as much as the Razer Phone 2 or the Asus ROG gaming phone. The middle of the back portion has a ‘X’ like shape that comes out slightly above the back. It houses the dual camera at the top. There is an illuminating ‘S’ logo at the centre along with two side lights that can illuminate and flash through colors for different notifications and apps. These lights can be adjusted from the pre-installed app. The sides of the’X’ design is sleek with matte like finishing which makes it easy to grip the phone. The phone measures in at 163.6 x 75 x 8.8 mm which is rather thick for a phone but acceptable for a gaming phone as additional space is needed for proper cooling. At the front, the display is lined with a subtle green colored edging. The display is a 6.39 inch AMOLED touchscreen with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,340 pixels. This may be a letdown for those who prefer the higher resolution displays from the flagship models but the display does provide good clarity, color and brightness. The screen also comes with Apples’s 3D touch like functions, named as the Magic Press in this gaming phone. It can be used to trigger different action in game settings. The sensitivity can be adjusted to give different pressure presses. The bezels are also on the larger side as there is no any kind of notch. To be exact, the screen-to-body ratio is at 81.7%, not far from Xiaomi’s very own budget, Redmi series. This might be a good thing though. Serious gamers wouldn’t want their games to be interrupted by a notch but on the other hand, there are some smart notch-hiding features on other phones which can be turned on or off depending on the application. With the larger bezel, the Black Shark 2 fits in dual front-facing speakers at the top and bottom of the phone. However, based on some user reviews, the Razer Phone 2 still sounds better. There is an in-display fingerprint scanner on the Black Shark 2 which works just like the one in the Mi 9. Inside the phone is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor with a variation of 6, 8 or 12 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of internal storage. The specs are good enough to push power hungry games such as PUBG at higher details. To push it further, the Black Shark 2 has a cooling system that covers all components of the chipset to ensure efficient heat dissipation. The phone has a dual camera setup, with one 48 MP sensor and a 12 MP telephoto sensor. The cameras come with 2x optical zoom. On the front is a 20 MP single selfie shooter. The phone does come with the latest Bluetooth 5.0 and supports fast charging for its 4,000 mAh battery via the type-C port. The Black Shark 2 comes with its very own gaming controllers which are sold separately. The thumbstick and buttons attach to the left side of the phone and the touchpad and buttons attach to the right side. They come with the rear case to clip them onto. The controllers are paired by Bluetooth and have to be charged separately via their own type-C ports as they can’t draw power from the phone. There is also an optional cooling case that according to the company, can cool the device by 5 °C in about 10 seconds. The Black Shark 2 is an impressive gaming device, but it remains at that. Not many would want to get a gaming device and loose the portability of the latest flagships. Apart from that, it has one major competitor which is the Razer Phone 2. However, the Black Shark 2 does provide a lot for a very reasonable price. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

The Xiaomi Black Shark 2 will settle for nothing less than being the best gaming smartphone. With the Snapdragon 855 high-end SoC, passive liquid-cooling, up to 12 GB RAM and optional controllers, it seems to have very high chances of achieving this. Our review will reveal if gamers should pull the trigger on this.

While the Black Shark 2 Pro is technically equipped with the latest hardware for a high-end mobile gaming experience, our testing showed that audio was not one of the Black Shark’s strongest features. In terms of recording, the lack of bass, imbalance, distortion, and hissing were noticeable. While there are many areas for improvement, especially in bass, the audio playback should satisfy most hard-core gamers, who are more likely to be seduced by the Black Shark 2 Pro’s sleek futuristic look and visual performance capabilities anyway. But for users who are more inclined to use their phones to listen to music or to watch movies, there are better-performing smartphone options available at similar prices.

Combining a great camera, excellent internals and improved gaming credentials over the original, the Black Shark 2 is a triple threat that betters most of its gaming phone rivals. It’s lumbered with a handful of instabilities and quirks, but even with those accounted for, the bang for buck it delivers is off the chart.

Primarily aimed at smartphone “gamers,” the fast processing engine, large screen and futuristic design will be the biggest selling points for the Black Shark 2. As such, camera performance is a secondary consideration, but its dual-camera setup with optical zoom and a bokeh mode mean that there are some nice photography features, too. Good results are possible in favorable conditions outdoors, where exposure, color, and zoom are good. Inconsistent performance for autofocus and bokeh mode, as well as low detail in zoom shots in low light, place the Black Shark 2 in the bottom half of our rankings for image quality, however.

Here’s the thing, the Black Shark 2 isn’t all that cheap, coming at a minimum of 549€ for the base storage model. For a phone which completely fails at the very thing it’s designed for, I can’t see how one would able to justify its purchase. The cameras are massively underwhelming, and the display is also lacklustre compared to other phones. The only redeeming features of the Black Shark 2 remains its 240Hz touchscreen, the MasterTouch feature, and above-average battery life.

Xiaomi's second stab at a gaming phone has really has managed to hit the sweet spot between outstanding performance, a lovely-looking display, and a fantastically low price, and if you can get over a couple of potential bugbears in the form of the AMOLED panel and lower refresh rate, it's an absolute bargain for gamers, and verges on a must-buy for everyone else, if they can get past the somewhat aggressive design.

The Black Shark 2 has all the bells and whistles you'd expect from a gaming phone: LED lighting, top-notch hardware, a gaming mode with granular customization options, and a massive battery that lets you play all day. The answer is simple because the Kindle can only read books, ipod can only listen to music. When using them, users can feel the purest and most extreme experience. Just like switching to a mobile phone, the mobile game experience is the ultimate and the person has nothing to do. Naturally, the irreplaceability of the game phone will become more and more prominent. By the way, you can use Xiaomi Black Shark 2 Pro 12GB 256GB

At Rs 39,999, the Black Shark 2 is a mighty phone with supreme gaming capabilities. It fares better than other gaming phones in its class However, the Nubia Red Magic 3 at Rs 35,999 is slightly cheaper and offers a 90Hz AMOLED display as well as a fan-based cooling system. And it's as capable than the Black Shark 2. For the geeks, the Red Magic 3 may sound better. The Black Shark 2, however, offers an overall polished experience -- you get a more complete smartphone. If that is what you want, go ahead and buy it.

Gaming phones seem to be getting very popular these days. And one of the latest entrants to this segment is the Chinese brand, Black Shark, which has released the Black Shark 2 in the Indian market. But does this new player have what it takes to make a mark in a market that could not be dented by the likes of the Asus ROG and the Nubia Red Magic 3? We could have gone the normal spec and description way but felt that this phone merited a bit more. So here’s our review of the Black Shark 2. In verse.

The Black Shark 2 is a great phone, that we thoroughly liked, but one that we find surprisingly hard to recommend. The lack of a 90Hz screen means that while it will sustain its performance longer than most flagships it wont give you any smoother framerates. And the missing 3.5mm jack means you can't charge and use headphones at the same time, which is a bigger issue on a gaming phone than anywhere else.

And the missing 3.5mm jack means you can't charge and use headphones at the same time, which is a bigger issue on a gaming phone than anywhere else.

This is a powerful gaming device that gives you bang for the buck as far as speed and gaming performance are considered. Extensive gaming sessions will cause warming up of the device but it can be tackled by installing the side-out case. The camera performance during the day is quite impressive. The battery also runs long and will easily last a day and a half for any average smartphone user.

The Black Shark 2 is a gaming-centric device but also has most of the things you look for in a regular smartphone. Priced at Rs 39,999, the phone has a good form factor, gaming-inspired design, sleek performance, ample game-related customisations, capable battery and a capable camera set-up. Except multimedia, there is little that the phone is not able to deliver on. Consider this one if you need an all-round smartphone that also doubles up as a gaming device.

Black Shark’s application of this sort of tech is still mostly a gimmick. Its utility will vary depending on what games you like to play, and you won’t get much use out of it if you’re already an ace at playing games on a touchscreen. But personally, it was revelatory. Instead of logging onto Twitter every few minutes, for a lack of anything better to do on my phone, I actually felt the rare pull to play a mobile game.

The Black Shark 2 is a good phone, not a great phone. It delivers hardcore performance in key metrics like battery life and raw power. Beyond that, the clean software, customizable light show, capable camera, and dedicated gaming experiences should entice those looking for a mobile BFG to tote into their next campaign.

You’ll want to make certain this phone works on your network of choice. In the USA, you’ll most likely be using T-Mobile USA, AT&T, or Verizon – but not across all bands. This might be a better phone to purchase exclusively for 1P games and wi-fi internet – but it’s up to you!

The Black Shark 2 has pretty much come out of nowhere and won our hearts. It's an insanely powerful Android device which, even if you're not a gamer, will enrich your mobile life. Stock Android, amazing reception, robust stamina, a fast touchscreen and an eye-catching design all combine to make this a real gem of a phone; if you happen to be into mobile games as well, then it really is the perfect device. When you consider that you can get all of this for less than £500, then it becomes almost impossible to give this anything but the highest recommendation. Wireless charging, a 120Hz screen, water resistance and a 3.5mm headphone socket would have been nice, but for around half the price of a Galaxy S10, it's hard to grumble too much.

This gaming phone impresses on many levels: not only is it a super-powerful device for gaming, with great optional controller integration (sold separately) and a hyper-responsive screen, its design is a well-considered flagship alternative with great software too. If you let me define the Black Shark 2, I think it is the very pure hand-held weapon in the player’s mind. For the game player, having a better game experience is the meaning of the game phone. With the Snapdragon 855, the global tower-wide liquid cooling and the touch screen, the Black Shark 2 has become a powerful gaming phone. If you are a mobile game player, this phone is definitely a great tool for you.

I'm incredibly impressed by the Black Shark 2 on first impressions. Packing an ultra-speedy processor and oodles of memory, an AMOLED display and a bunch of high-tech gaming features, you'd expect this smartphone to cost around £700. But with an affordable base price of £360, the Black Shark 2 is primed to take the mobile gaming market by storm.

You can do much worse for RM2499 if you want a gaming smartphone. The Black Shark 2 Pro may not be the perfect gaming phone for me, but it is still a cut above many other flagship smartphones when it comes to gaming. My main issues with it are the weird design choices as well as the absolutely deplorable translation work which makes the Black Shark 2 Pro seem like a rushed job.

The Black Shark 2 Pro (Price Check) runs on the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus mobile platform, and comes with either 8 GB RAM and 128 GB of storage, or 12 GB RAM and 256 GB of storage. Notably, it comes with UFS 3.0 storage, which is about 2X faster than the UFS 2.1 storage in Black Shark 2.

While the Black Shark 2 Pro isn’t officially for sale in the Philippines yet, folks in the company are quickly setting up the necessary facilities for their official entry to the Philippines. Black Shark reps tell me that they’ll be offering the Black Shark 2 Pro close to the price that they’re offering the phone in Malaysia, which comes out to around Php 31K when directly converted to our currency for the 8GB/128GB variant, with the higher-spec 12GB/256GB variant going for around 37.1K when directly converted.

The recent trend for gaming handsets is great news for those who like entertainment on the go, but it’s also a boon for smartphone buyers who want incredible power at a reasonable cost. The likes of the Nubia Red Magic 3 and Black Shark 2 offer Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipsets at a fraction of the price of rival devices from Samsung and the like, and also come with cool features like Switch-style controllers, liquid cooling and super-responsive screens.

Xiaomi Black Shark 3 Pro
Black Shark is a Xiaomi-backed gaming smartphone and accessories maker. The Black Shark 3 is the latest addition to the family. This phone offers some sweet specifications especially tailored for mobile gamers, including the Black Shark 3 Pro’s display size dwarfing even the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. The Xiaomi Black Shark 3 comes with a 6.67-inch AMOLED display with a 1080 x 2400 resolution. It has also been incorporated with a 90Hz refresh rate, which makes the overall experience with the phone rather smooth but of course not the best when compared to 120 Hz. However, the device has a 270Hz touch sampling rate, which is the fastest touch polling on a smartphone yet. The device has been seen beating the Apple iPhone 11 Pro, the OnePlus 7T Pro, the Oppo Reno Ace and the Asus ROG Phone II in touch responsiveness. This is definitely something to pay special attention to.
The Black Shark 3 also has an impressive single-finger touch response delay of 24 ms, while multi-finger touch registers in 28 ms. This is definitely enough to minimize input lag and ensure a fluent and optimal gaming experience for users. Apart from that, the device runs on Android 10.0 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset paired with an Adreno 650 GPU. The Adreno 650 renders graphics 25 percent faster using 35 percent less power while remaining at peak processing speeds for much longer due to its improved thermal efficiency. The Black Shark 3 is definitely living up to its name as a gaming mobile with these features.
The device comes with either 8 GB or 12 GB of RAM along with 128 GB of storage. The storage size is definitely lagging compared to the Black Shark 3 Pro, which caters up to 256 GB of storage. This fact might disappoint some of buyers out there, because there is no microSD expansion available for those who might want to make the most of the 64-megapixel camera; there is definitely a high chance of the onboard storage depleting very quickly, even before you knew it. As far as the camera is concerned, the Black Shark 3 has been equipped with a 64-megapixel main camera, a 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera along with a 5-megapixel depth sensor at the back. In addition, it has a 20-megapixel selfie shooter front camera. The device actually combines four 64-megapixel photos for a massive 256 million pixels, and the processing actually takes no less than 10 seconds, which is definitely commendable. The post-processing of the images might be a drawback for some users, though. The captured images do look good after processing, but they have an oil-paint-like feel to it. Such oil painting artefacts were a common complaint with phones such as the OnePlus 5 and now the Black Shark 3. This device comes in three colors, namely Lightning Black, Armor Gray and Star Silver, for users to choose from.

Honestly, no I wouldn’t and there’s a couple of reasons for that. It’s not that this isn’t a really good device for gaming and as a phone, but it’s just a touch too big and heavy. That makes it cumbersome to carry around all day long and it’s at least $400 too expensive to be a competitive option.

Although some gamers may be perfectly happy with it, dark rendering in every ambient lighting condition proved to be a major problem for the Xiaomi Black Shark 3 Pro in our display tests. Its major strengths, that of having good control over aliasing artifacts and good motion and touch performance, are also of more interest to gamers than to the typical end-user at large, who may find its shortcomings in other attributes too important to overlook.

While the Black Shark 3 Pro’s overall Audio score tops its predecessor’s by a few points, it continues to lag behind our database’s average score. In recording, although the third generation demonstrates improvement, its performance still is well below average due to severe tonal imbalance, numerous artifacts and poor background recordings. As for audio playback, unsurprisingly, Xiaomi’s latest gaming phone globally fares slightly better when playing games. While it certainly delivers good volume and excels at controling artifacts, its tonal imbalance and muffled overall sound impairs dynamics and spatial reproduction. However, the Biso Sound feature fixes many of those shortcomings by substantially increasing the low- and high-end extension, as well as restoring natural mids and sharp treble.

That’s a tough question to answer. While we did suggest you to hold off your purchase of the original Black Shark 3, the Pro variant comes in with a big price jump. It is available in two variants:

The Black Shark 3 ticks a lot of boxes for a gaming phone: big screen, handy accessories, extra cooling, and plenty of performance under the hood. If you can live with the styling of the phone, and the features that it omits, then this could be the gaming handset for you.

If you’re looking for a new gaming phone, the Black Shark 3 could be it. It packs a top-end chipset, a handy gaming mode and a 90Hz screen, all for a lower price than almost any phone with similar specs. However it’s big, heavy and has side buttons that are hard to reach, so it might not be great for people who aren’t big mobile gamers - and its rear design, bedecked with LED strips and a large X design, may not be to everyone’s tastes.

The Black Shark 3 doesn’t revolutionise the gaming phone market. But it ticks all the right boxes that the limited number of Western gaming phone users look at. It comes with a decent high refresh rate screen, powerhouse parts and a distinct gamer-focused design. The only downside is some of the features will likely put off more casual gamers and regular phone buyers.

The Black Shark 3 Pro is a flagship – a gaming flagship; for RM4,100, this phone is a good buy for people who take mobile gaming seriously – it’s physical pop-up triggers alone is a big selling point; you couple that with its awesome performance, and you’ve got yourself a very capable gaming smartphone.

If you’re an avid gamer, early GeForce Now subscriber or regularly use your phone to stream videos then the Black Shark 3 Pro is a solid handset. Its giant 7.1-inch screen and custom “Master Controller” shoulder buttons make it feel more like a mobile console than a traditional handset, especially when you pair it with the firm’s optional gaming peripherals.

Xiaomi Black Shark 3
The Xiaomi Black Shark 3 is the newest gaming phone from the Xiaomi subsidiary. Black Shark is a company that has been targeting the mobile gaming phone niche market for a few years now, and the Black Shark 3 is its latest device. This smartphone is not just a phone that has been designed to be great for gaming, but rather a device that has been created seemingly only for mobile gamers, as all its unique selling points are ones which will be far more useful for someone who plays lots of games than for the everyday smartphone user.
Just like any other Black Shark phone, the Black Shark 3 seems to scream ‘gamer’ in terms of its appearance with the rear bedecked with a massive ‘X’ pattern that houses the three camera bumps in its triangular top zone and a four-pin pad used for magnetic charging on the bottom side. The ‘Shark Space’ switch, which trigger the gaming-focused mode, is situated on the bottom of the right edge. This phone also comes with a single USB-C port for charging and wired data transfer purposes. In addition, there is a 3.5mm headphone jack on the top of the phone.
An interesting design element of the Black Shark 3 has to be the presence of LED strips on the back part of the phone. One LED strip is situated by the camera array, another one by the magnetic pad, and a main central one in the Black Shark logo. The purpose of these strips is to display a range of colours in different patterns, and it can be customized by the user based on their individual needs and preferences. While it is definitely fun to customize and play with the pattern, it should be noted that this feature does drain the battery if left on for too long.
In terms of its display, this smartphone has a 1080x1400 AMOLED 6.67-inch screen. While this is not the highest resolution screen that can be found on a phone, it is definitely good enough for gaming purposes, as most gamers stay at 1080p. The refresh rate is 90Hz, which makes scrolling through social media more fluid. As for the camera, the Black Shark 3 has been equipped with a 64-megapixel main camera along with a 13-megapixel ultra wide lens and a 5-megapixel depth-sensing snapper at the back. Apart from that, there is a 20-megapixel front camera for selfies.
The Black Shark 3 comes with a Snapdragon 865 chipset that is either paired with 8 GB or 12 GB of RAM. In terms of battery, this device has been packed with a 4,720mAh battery, which is normally pretty big for a smartphone, but rather appropriate for this model due to its large screen. The phone powers up through 30W charging in the 8GB version, but upgrades to 65W fast-charging with the 12GB version. This difference might justify the price variation between the two. Overall, this model definitely deserves consideration in the mobile gaming niche market for its features.

Let us see whether Xiaomi has managed to create something that will be able to satisfy the gaming community.

If you're looking for a smartphone to play mobile games on, you'll be safely serviced with the Black Shark 3, as its hardware and software work well together to make your gaming experience a treat. The Xiaomi Black Shark 4 is not quite as extravagantly designed as other gaming phones and comparatively cheap. However, it has a lot to offer with a 144 Hz display, 5G and mechanical shoulder keys. Read our review to find out whether the gaming phone is worth it.

I’m firmly in the camp where I would LOVE to see more Xiaomi phones made available here in the U.S. Despite its “gaming focus” the Black Shark 4 is just the latest example of why. The phone offers an incredible value, along with solid cameras, near-flagship specs, and support for 120W fast charging. And that’s not even including the 144Hz AMOLED panel that is flat and looks fantastic. All of this in a package that’s priced at less than $500, and it’s definitely one of the best phones of the year. So if you’re in the market for a phone that’s more powerful than what the Pixel 5a has to offer, get the Black Shark 4. You won’t be disappointed.

So that’s it – the Black Shark 4 is out in the market right now with the starting price of RM1,999 only. Fantastic price for such a phone, honestly. You can even get it on Maxis Zerolution, by the way. Though I don’t know why they’re bundling it with the split-type triggers. You already got a phone with physical popup triggers, why do you need yet another accessory for triggers? Anyway, I’m still loving the Black Shark 4. It’s a fantastic phone especially with what it offers at this price point. Seriously, for just RM1,999 starting price – you get the Snapdragon 870 chipset with physical triggers. It’s amazing.

To wrap things up, it’s no longer surprising to see how mobile gaming is slowly but surely getting better recognition. And if you just so happen to be looking for a bang-for-buck gaming phone, then the Black Shark 4 might just be your answer to that. On paper, the Black Shark 4 seemed like an easy recommendation. It offers an excellent price/performance ratio, it has a unique set of physical shoulder buttons for gaming, a fast and bright 144Hz OLED panel, great-sounding stereo speakers, insanely fast charging and dependable camera performance. But as we dug deeper, the 144Hz display turned out to be a gimmick in a large portion of the games. Running at 144Hz wasn't even possible in simple menus and apps. Support for HRR gaming is also extremely limited, beating the purpose of buying the Black Shark 4 solely for gaming. And when you add the not-so-great battery life and the lack of 4K video stabilization to the cons list, it makes it hard for us to give the handset a higher score.

The Black Shark 4 certainly delivered top-tier mobile gaming in our review, without costing an arm and a leg especially if you’re in the Philippines. The physical shoulder buttons give you actual tactile feedback, something that’s missing on more expensive gaming phones from other brands. And despite the switch to a Snapdragon 870 chipset, the phone still delivers excellent gaming performance no matter what you throw at it.

The Black Shark 4 has addressed the biggest issue with mobile gaming, giving you a more responsive screen as well customizable triggers. This is the first phone I actually enjoyed playing more competitive mobile games on. Not only that, I was actually really good at them, which I think is reason enough to get this for most people.

At the core, there’s nothing wrong with the concept of gaming phones. They’re thicker than your average flagship phone due to bigger batteries, a heat sink, and several other components that you probably won’t find in phones made by Google, Apple, or Samsung. They’re proofs of concept that you can get laptop-tier specs into a pocket-sized device. If only a company made a device with more focused software that doesn’t feel so pressured to lean (in Black Shark’s case, very awkwardly) into the stereotypical lane of what it thinks a gamer wants in phone software. It’s really not a good look. For all of the power and high-end tech that’s bundled in gaming phones, they aren’t great all-around picks for people who want great software, boundary-pushing cameras, and a more appealing device around the edges.

As far as gaming phones go, the Black Shark 4 Pro is a solid entry in a long line of gaming phones. Its key feature which lets it stand out from the rest is the physical shoulder buttons. These not only allow it to perform its usual macro duties in-game but also serve as additional shortcuts while in everyday use. And this is a major plus if you like snapping photos with your phone, since it can both serve as the shortcut to launch the app, as well as the physical shutter button. Though while playing games, the Black Shark 4 Pro can get pretty warm. This is not alleviated by the case that comes in the box – at least, not by much. And while running GFXBench, it got to a point where it feels as hot as a kettle. Unfortunate heat issues aside, the physical keys make it a very compelling phone to get compared to other gaming phones on the market. Though despite that, it has to be pointed out that despite getting into the local market earlier this year, it was announced in March of 2021. If you’re okay with getting a gaming phone that is a generation behind but still plenty powerful for most uses.

The Black Shark 4 Pro squeezes every last drop of potential out of last year’s components, pairing them with 120W charging and physical shoulder buttons, to make a decent budget gaming phone. But there are too many problems and an extremely creepy assistant app, to make it worthwhile.

The Black Shark 4 Pro is an exceptionally well-built gaming phone, with all the nuts and bolts that we've come to expect from one. Better yet, its $579 starting price undercuts most of the competition, without compromising on processing power and functionality. Just be prepared for the device's heavy skin over Android, a slower cadence of software updates, and middling battery life. If you can get over those shortcomings, the Black Shark 4 Pro may be the gaming phone for you.

So, at the end of the day, the Black Shark 4 Pro. Is it worth buying even after a year since its debut? There are two variants that you can choose from. However, I do advise you to wait for the upcoming Black Shark 5 to be released first since it should be announced soon. After that, maybe the price of the Black Shark 4 Pro will drop to about RM2.5k or lower? Anyway, that’s all I have for you today – the Black Shark 4 Pro is still a very powerful phone given that you have some way to protect your hands roasted by the phone.

The Black Shark 4 Pro is a capable gaming phone, even with a 2021 spec. While the gaming phone's Snapdragon 888 is beginning to look old compared to 2022 gaming phones, benchmarks show that the manufacturers have squeezed every drop of power possible for chart-topping benchmark results, even when compared to phones with the upgraded Snapdragon 888 Plus. It really is an impressive feat of engineering, and that translates to a high-end mobile gaming experience devoid of freezing or lag. It is worth mentioning that it's not technically the fastest Black Shark, with the follow-up Black Shark 4S range – with a Snapdragon 888 Plus – readily available in China. But, given the delay with the Black Shark 4 Pro, it’ll be a while before that graces UK shores (if ever). If you’re more focused on the core gaming experience than the specs, the Black Shark 4 Pro is still a tempting option.

With so many manufacturers going after that skinny-bezelled sleek look for their smartphones, it's refreshing when a phone comes along that's different. The Black Shark 4 Pro's priority is all about practicality: giving you a big and bright screen, big sound, but therefore being that bit bigger than your usual. But does that really matter? But if you are a gamer then a feature that makes a real difference is the Black Shark 4 Pro's two physical trigger switches. These pop out of the phone's frame, giving you something tactile to press, which gives an advantage in fast-paced games where you don't want the screen blocked by your fingers. Sure, the camera system is a bit of a letdown, but we're not sure that's going to be a major red flag against a device such as this. The Black Share 4 Pro is one accomplished piece of kit that blurs the lines between gaming phones and affordable flagships. We think it's fantastic - whether you're a gamer or not.

Starting from the price of RM2,599, the Black Shark 4 Pro is a worthy offering in the gaming smartphone market. It offers several top-of-the-line specifications and it does rather well when it comes to gaming itself. There are pros and cons as you’d expect. The review unit that we had is slightly different from the one offered in Malaysia, where it comes with 12GB RAM mated to a 128GB internal storage. If anything, I wished that the battery would perform slightly better. There is the speedy 120W fast charger however to combat that and get you up and running in no time. After all is said and done, we award the Black Shark 4 Pro with our Silver Pokdeward.

The Black Shark 4 Pro is a gamer’s phone and is well-suited for that purpose, thanks to its smooth feel and accurate touch during play. However, its overall lack of readability (especially outdoors), its imperfect color accuracy, and its HDR10 playback performance make it less suitable as an all-purpose device.

The Xiaomi Black Shark 4S smartphone is undoubtedly a low-cost gaming smartphone. It has everything a player needs, whether it’s a pop-up trigger or advanced level clocking speed. But there are some points where the phone is lacking. The first would be the camera section and the second would be the battery life. Although, everything looks decent in the end with the heavy gaming customization. By analysis, if you’re looking for a gaming device, the Black Shark 4S is worth recommending. But these valuable features aren’t enough for you, in that case, you can also check out the Black Shark 4S Pro or the Asus ROG 5S Pro in the meantime.

As a gaming phone, the Black Shark 4S Gundam Limited Edition does not have crazy piles of materials but is carefully polished in details and software. In our actual game test, in addition, tgame’sgame’s frame rate has been stable at a high level; the various functions make people see the sincerity of this phone. In general, the Black Shark 4S Gundam Limited Edition is an excellent gaming phone full of design. Under the premise that it is co-branded with Gundam to ensure a cool appearance, it can play extreme games without extreme configuration and achieve super battery life and super-fast charging. Such gaming phones are rare in the current market. If you are also a mobile game party, then the Black Shark 4S Gundam Limited Edition will be very suitable for you.

The Black Shark 4S Pro was released in mid-October 2021, with the “plus” version of the Snapdragon 888 chipset. Given the identical results, we are posting only this short article on the Black Shark 4S Pro. The Black Shark 4S Pro’s Display protocol performance is almost identical to that of the older Black Shark 4 Pro. The only noteworthy difference is that the 4S Pro does a slightly better job of managing dark tones in HDR10 videos, thereby gaining a point over the 4 Pro in that category. However, it should be noted that neither the 4S Pro nor the 4 Pro manages video dark tone rendering very well.

From the overall analysis, the Xiaomi Black Shark 4S Pro smartphone can be considered a good gaming device, but at the same time, it lacks a decent flagship phone. If we only have to recommend this phone for its impressive gaming features, then the price you put to buy this device is worth it. You won’t regret buying this phone for sure. Undoubtedly, the phone has exceptional features, but if you want to go full throttle and want to get industry-leading gaming features, then the maximized Asus ROG 5s Pro smartphone is worth your time.

Xiaomi updates its gaming phone with a new look, faster SoC, slightly larger battery, and a new main camera. Is the Black Shark 5 Pro a recommendation for ambitious gamers?
Source: DxOMark
The Black Shark 5 Pro camera achieved a decent score in photo and video thanks to its capabilities in outdoor and indoor conditions. It also has an outstanding macro feature that allows the user to take close-up pictures with a good level of details. However, the camera was less performant in challenging conditions such as HDR scenes and low light when taking photos or shooting videos. In those conditions, some artifacts were visible, and the device struggled to render scene texture accurately. The device’s lack of a telephoto lens means that it relies on a digital zoom, which had an impact on image quality when zooming in. When taking video, the Black Shark 5 Pro performed quite similarly to the Xiaomi 12, its closest competitor, but there were some differences in the color rendering. The Black Shark 5 Pro also showed some issues with video stabilization and had limited zoom capabilities.

The Black Shark 5 Pro’s best attribute is its smoothness, with good fluidity in every use case. This good control of motion teams up with good accuracy and an absence of frame drops to provide a good overall gaming experience. However, the device has below-average readability, especially under sunlight, and both its brightness and color are noticeably non-uniform across the screen. One of its weakest points is its handling of HDR10 videos, with poor brightness and a strongly visible green cast contributing to an unpleasant viewing experience.

The gaming phone Black Shark 5 Pro struggled during our autonomy tests. Despite its excellent night management during our typical usage scenario, it couldn’t last more than 2 days. Whether in our calibrated or on-the-go tests, the device’s autonomy was below average in all our use cases, especially when calling, streaming music, scrolling on social apps, and using GPS navigation. The real strength of this device, however, lies in its charging experience, one of the best we’ve tested so far. It took only 12 minutes and 49 seconds to charge 80% of the battery’s 4650 mAh capacity, the fastest charging time we’ve measured so far. And to reach a full charge, the device needed a total of only 23 minutes and 19 seconds, which earned the 5 Pro a full charge top score. With such a charging speed, a user could gain about 8 and a half hours of autonomy from a mere 5-minute charging boost. However, the residual consumption of the powerful 120W charger when the device was still plugged in and fully charged was high, and the consumption of the charger itself when it was plugged into an outlet was more than 2 times higher than the average of our database. The discharge currents were also high in all our use cases, whether in factory default or calibrated mode. The discharge current when calling was the highest in our database to date. Compared with devices from the Premium segment ($600 to $799), the Black Shark 5 Pro’s global score was slightly above average mostly because of its outstanding charging performance.

The Black Shark 5 Pro follows in its predecessor’s footsteps and becomes the new top-scorer in our Audio ranking database, achieving an impressive score of 161 in our tests. Overall, the Black Shark 5 Pro showed outstanding performances across all tested categories and use cases, both as a recording device and in playback. It is therefore perfectly suited whether you want to watch movies, send memos, play games, make selfie videos, listen to music, or record loud concerts. In playback, except for artifacts, the Black Shark 5 Pro outshines its competitors across almost all our tested categories and use cases, whether it is for playing music, watching movies, or gaming. Timbre reproduction is excellent, with rich yet natural midrange, clean and airy treble, and a very pleasing low-end boost. Dynamics and spatial attributes are both impressive, as for volume, the 5 Pro is simply the loudest device we’ve tested to date. Albeit not flawless, the phone’s ability to control playback sonic artifacts is very good overall, temporal artifacts, in particular, being notably well handled.

Undercutting the priciest gaming phone competition, the Black Shark 5 Pro marries high-end features like a 144Hz screen and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 power with physical shoulder buttons and gaming phone styling. Adding a respectable camera to the mix, the phone's a great shout for gamers who don't mind a busy interface and a bit of heat when tearing through 3D titles and 5G downloads.

Gaming phones are some of my favorite devices. But I feel like this Black Shark 5 Pro is a gaming phone in stealth mode. Without RGB's to announce your gaming presence - are you really even a gamer? Today we find out if the magnetic pop up buttons on the black shark 5 pro effect its structural integrity. We'll also test out the 120w fast charger to see if it can really charge the phone in 15 minutes.

The Black Shark 5 Pro brings just enough newness to its older iteration. The fresh design looks and feels fantastic, it no longer overheats as much, and you get buttery smooth performance. The device has a stunning 144hz OLED panel and magnetic triggers that can be assigned various functions, even outside of gaming. Sadly, the high price and lack of some features hold this gaming phone back.

The Black Shark 5 Pro offers a top-tier gaming experience, but it's easy to live with on daily basis, too. This is something that can't be said for a lot of gaming-focused devices, and we think it's pretty important if you're looking for a primary communications device. With the performance on offer here, as well as the novel features like the pop-up triggers, it's easily one of our top picks for gamers on the go.

The Black Shark 5 Pro offers a lot of good, but there are a lot of reasons to look elsewhere, too. The kernel source and update situation is particularly alarming, as companies are obligated under the GPL to release timely kernel sources. Some companies, such as OnePlus, have published kernel sources late but still typically always get to them at some point. Black Shark, however, just hasn’t released any kernel sources from the Black Shark 2 or newer. Even aside from that, the phone itself heats up incredibly when gaming, to the point that I worry it can cause harm and injury. Between that, the lack of a headphone jack, and the battery life concerns, there’s just not a lot that Black Shark gets right for a gaming phone. The shoulder triggers are cool and work well, but that’s the only genuinely unique feature about this phone that you can’t really get anything like anywhere else. As a result, if what you want is a gaming phone, it’s probably worth waiting to see what’s around the corner — particularly anything that may be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1.

However, the problem with futureproofing is that no one knows how much you are actually “futureproofing” since no one can predict the future. Maybe that hypothetical hot new game also chokes the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Who knows. Either way, I really can’t justify spending so much on getting the Black Shark 5 Pro. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a fantastic gaming phone – but it’s just too similar to the Black Shark 5.

The Black Shark 5 Pro is undeniably the best from the phone maker, and worthy of a spot on our best gaming phones list. The retractable shoulder triggers are essential to mobile gamers and there's no skimping on internal hardware either. Three months ago, I titled the Black Shark 4 Pro a "Gaming flagship killer". But with the 5 Pro's step-up in specs and pricing, Black Shark has become the one thing that it once sought to kill. That's not a bad thing per se; you now have a top-of-the-line smartphone that's just as capable for gamers as it is for power users. In sacrifice, Black Shark no longer has the value appeal that it once did. Would I still recommend the 5 Pro? Only if you want the best of the best.

The Black Shark 5 Pro has great hardware design language, stellar audio, pop-up shoulder triggers, and 120W HyperCharge support. I like the clean software with zero bloatware on the Black Shark 5 Pro as well. Primary camera delivers great pictures day and night which is good to see in a gaming smartphone. But there are some things that the POCO F4 GT and RedMagic 7 series do better. For example, the display itself doesn’t get as bright as advertised, there’s no Gorilla Glass protection and 144Hz refresh rate is served for Shark Space only. Thermal management on the Black Shark 5 Pro is quite poor though. And there is no official IP rating available. It seems that the Black Shark 5 Pro doesn’t fully live up to the hype despite having great specs, loud and crisp audio, and a great primary camera. For the suggested retail price, I would suggest you look at the POCO F4 GT or the RedMagic 7 series before deciding to get the Black Shark 5 Pro.

The Black Shark 5 Pro is an iterative rather than a major upgrade over the Black Shark 4 Pro, and it's not exactly a straightforward upgrade either. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is now on board and the engineering team has tried to squeeze the most out of it, all at the cost of poor in-hand comfort due to the scorching hot body. The two giant vapor chambers keep the powerful chipset cool by dumping all that heat straight to the user's palms in a frankly uncomfortable way. All things considered, it shows that Black Shark engineers are trying hard. The Black Shark 5 Pro manages to incrementally improve over its predecessor in pretty much every way while also maintaining a reasonable price tag. That being said, we can't help but feel that all of the engineering efforts were invested in sort of auxiliary aspects of the phone without really doing anything to push it above and beyond and make it stand out. Bottom line - the Black Shark 5 Pro is a solid and dependable phone that manages to be competitive among the gaming phone crowd.

For gaming, the Xiaomi Black Shark 5 Pro is a champ. It has a top-end processor, useful gaming mode and retractable triggers that will deliver a huge edge in competitive games. However, its rough edges emerge when you try to use it as an everyday mobile. Battery life is disappointing, it overheats frequently, and the cameras are nothing to write home about either.

The Xiaomi Black Shark 5 Pro smartphone is a great phone if you are looking for something exciting in the gaming segment. Yet on the same note, it doesn’t have anything that stands out from the rest of the competition, apart from the SSD support. Despite this, the screen size is small, it doesn’t have a massive battery, and a few more other things. On the other hand, you can also check out the recent Asus ROG Phone 5s Pro, which offers similar specs but offers better performance. If we have to recommend the Black Shark 5 Pro, we only pick it for the seamlessly smooth gameplay experience. However, the final decision is in your hand as it’s your hard-earned money.

The positioning of the Black Shark has always been the flagship gaming phone, and it was relatively conservative in taking pictures before. This time, the Black Shark 5 Pro introduced a 108M camera for the first time, as well as 13MP wide-angle and 5MP telephoto macro lenses, plus a new generation of self-developed polar night algorithms. According to the actual photos, the camera level of the Black Shark 5 Pro has reached the level of a 3,000 yuan mobile phone. Of course, as a gaming phone, gaming can be said to be the job of Black Shark 5 Pro. The combination of the shoulder keys and the “Black Shark Game Space” greatly expands the gameplay of the game, and can also kill enemies more effectively in many competitive games. Coupled with the top performance release of the new Snapdragon 8 processor and the silky experience provided by the 144Hz high-brush screen, who else is the current gaming phone apart from the Black Shark 5 Pro?

In our objective and perceptual tests, the Black Shark 5 Pro showed outstanding performances across all tested categories and use cases, both as a recording device and in playback. It is therefore perfectly suited whether you want to watch movies, send memos, play games, make selfie videos, listen to music, or record loud concerts.

As a cheaper gaming model, the Xiaomi Black Shark 5 comes with a fast but not a top processor. However, the 144 Hz screen of the Pro model remains. Is the Black Shark 5 too slow, or still a bargain for gamers?

I enjoyed my time using this phone and I think this is a fantastic phone. Even the specs isn’t exactly the newest in today’s standards – it still manages to perform magnificently in the latest games that we played. We still have our review of the Black Shark 5 Pro coming soon. That will be an interesting one since I’ll mostly be talking about why you should and should not buy the Black Shark 5 Pro.

The main attractions of the Xiaomi Black Shark 5 are its display, processing, gaming power, and battery. All in all, it can provide an extremely satisfying gaming performance with this smartphone. If you are a gamer or just someone who prefers hardcore performance, this phone is for you. Considering the specifications this smartphone absolutely justifies its price. If you want an alternative option, the Redmi K50 Gaming edition is an equally impressive gaming smartphone. But the final decision depends on your budget and requirement.
