Reviews for the Xiaomi 14
Excellent battery life, 90-watt fast charging, 3 Leica cameras with 50 MP and a 3000-nit bright OLED panel that runs at 120 Hz. So far, so good, but the compact Xiaomi 14 pulls another ace out of its sleeve with Qualcomm's latest high-end SoC Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Is this a smartphone without any weaknesses? Read more to find out.

In just about every way, the Xiaomi 14 proves itself the equal of Samsung’s Galaxy S24. Both are powerful compact handsets that offer exceptional battery life and strong cameras, with the only differences coming down to personal preference. Would you rather pay less or get more storage? Do you prefer better scratch protection or faster charging? Both need to do better with their software design, so that’s a tie, as well. For me, the Samsung just about tips it, with the Galaxy AI features and an additional three years of OS updates making the Galaxy S24 better value for money overall. If you’d rather the faster charging or the cavernous storage, however, the Xiaomi 14 will not disappoint. It may not have clung onto the best compact flagship crown, but it’s a hell of a runner-up.

Xiaomi 14 demonstrated a great battery experience in our tests. Compared to its predecessor, Xiaomi 13, the device gained 5 points in our battery score, thanks to its improved performance in charging and efficiency. In autonomy tests, Xiaomi 14 demonstrated an above-average performance. Under moderate usage, the device lasted more than 53 hours. The device also showed decent autonomy in individual test cases. However, the device struggled in outdoor tests, with the autonomy ranked at the bottom half among our tested devices. Charging is where the Xiaomi 14 showed the biggest improvement over its predecessor. The device supports up to 80W of charging power, which helped the battery reach a full charge in less than 40 minutes, placing it among the best devices we have tested so far.

The Xiaomi 14 is a delight to use. It’s powerful, has a great display, packs an excellent camera array and offers speedy wired and wireless charging. The fact that it manages to do all of this while remaining relatively small makes it an excellent option for anyone who prefers a more compact handset. That said, the Xiaomi 14 is up against some stiff competition, with the main contender being the Samsung Galaxy S24. Samsung’s device is slightly smaller and slightly cheaper, but still offers plenty of power and great cameras. The Xiaomi definitely has its advantages, especially with low-light photography, charging speed and gaming performance (compared to the Exynos-powered S24). However, many people will prefer Samsung’s software and the added benefit its AI tools bring to the table. All in all, the Xiaomi 14 is a great compact flagship and it’s easy to recommend. If you want all the latest features and top-end hardware, with a little less bulk in your pocket, this is undoubtedly one of the finer options.

Yes, because it is one of the best “small” phone cameras. Pricing may hover in and around the $900-$1,000 USD mark to start, and while tough to find right now, that will likely change in the coming months from online retailers happy to ship to North America.

Never a simple question to answer but you should definitely give the Xiaomi 14 serious consideration if you’re looking for a top-notch flagship in 2024. I personally love this compact and high performance handset. In lots of ways, it outpaces rivals from the big names. The design is gorgeous in almost every way, I just wish this Jade Green colourway wasn’t a fingerprint magnet. There’s very little to complain about when it comes to hardware here. The display is stunning (and more compact than most), performance is blazingly fast, charging is rapid and the cameras are astounding. The key question here is whether you want to pay more than the likes of the Pixel 8 and Galaxy S24 when HyperOS is a step down and software support, though decent, isn’t as long. I’m seriously tempted (with some user interface tweaking) to use it as my main device, which is about as high as praise gets from a technology journalist.

Having used this phone a lot since it was launched a few weeks ago at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, it’s really growing on us. It’s nice and compact, well designed, offers a colourful, sharp screen and good battery life. Camera performance is really very good too. The problem Xiaomi is facing is that even ‘really very good’ might not be enough to stand out in such a crowded market, with so many competitors really piling on the extras and lots of price cutting going on. Then there is the issue of Xiaomi’s brand recognition in the UK – it’s not a well-known brand at all. Reviewed as a standalone camera phone, however, the Xiaomi 14 is a winner. The only real downsides are the somewhat premium price and occasionally iffy AF tracking. When it comes to the price, we suspect further discounting will take place, either from Xiaomi or network providers. If your budget stretches, and you want a top-notch Android phone that your mate is unlikely to even know about, then go for it.

Overall, I have loved using the Xiaomi 14. It is a very balanced offering from the company that ticks almost all boxes starting with the compact, well-built design, a nice display, good haptics, flagship performance with a stable software experience, and reliable enough cameras. And, if you look at the global launch price, it definitely is a pure value-for-money compact phone. If it launches here at 1 lakh periphery in Nepal, the Xiaomi 14 will get no competition. If you are willing to spend more though, there is the Samsung Galaxy S24 with a slightly better camera optimization. But, I believe Xiaomi is on the right path with this phone! It just feels like we are getting a nice year-on-year improvement with the Xiaomi flagship lately, and slowly catching up with its competition!

The Xiaomi 14 is priced in India at Rs 69,999 for the 12GB RAM/ 512GB internal storage variant. Well, that’s the only variant of the phone that will be sold here. You get a one-year warranty on the phone. There are a few attractive launch offers like Rs 5,000 instant discount on HDFC and ICICI Credit cards and credit and debit card EMI. You can also get a Rs 5,000 exchange bonus on certain phones. So with the right phone and card, you can get the Xiaomi 14 for as low as Rs 59,999.

I had a very different opinion on the Xiaomi 14 when I got the unit, and this is usually how the process of product reviews typically goes. The pocketability, one-handedness, and all-day battery life make the Xiaomi 14 a compelling premium Android smartphone out there on the market. I would argue that for anyone who is looking for a high-end smartphone (especially one with a kick-ass camera), there are far more interesting options out there — those with bigger displays, longer battery life, and better cameras. However, that doesn’t change my perception of the Xiaomi 14. I find the device functional and conservative. I should mention that Xiaomi also offers (which surprised me during the launch) a super high-end Xiaomi 14 Ultra (starting at Rs 99,999), which I think is the biggest competitor to the base-line Xiaomi 14 (Rs 69,999).

So, should you consider investing in the Ciaomi 14? Our answer to that question takes the form of another question: just how much do you value Leica photography? For, while it is a very good performer, the Xiaomi 14 can be matched by other devices in the spec and general smartphone performance department by a number of other devices. Even its relatively compact form factor is not totally unique and is matched by the iPhone 15 and Pixel 8. What makes the Xiaomi 14 really different from any of the flagships out there is its Leica camera connection. There is no other phone out there that can deliver the Leica-flavored photography that Xiaomi does, with typical Leica hues, a night that stays dark and has a black-and-white flair, and portraits that no other phone can match.

The big question is always this: should you buy the phone? I would say, yes. I think the Xiaomi 14 is a well-made phone. The Xiaomi 14 appears to be a petite beauty, but it's actually a powerhouse. You get some really good performance, stable battery life, an amazing camera, and a beautiful build and design with the phone. There is nothing about the phone that would make me not recommend the phone. Xiaomi also did well with the pricing. The sole variant of the phone is priced at Rs 69,999 and, with some bank offers, you can get about Rs 10,000 off on the phone. If you can manage it for Rs 59,999, I think the Xiaomi 14 is a complete bang for your buck.

Good things come in small packages - where Xiaomi 14 may be compact, but it offers more than a regular flagship smartphone, from best-in-class aesthetics, flagship performance, and a versatile camera that's hard to beat in challenging lighting conditions. Ironically, we are not getting a Pro version this year in India because Xiaomi 14 has the most Pro features in the segment. Long thing short, if you want an Android device that can click the best possible shots while on the go with a Leica touch, offers consistent performance, delivers decent battery output, and a design that will make you ask why companies are not making phones this size, then Xiaomi 14 is for you. Yes, much like, as they say, nobody is perfect; the 14 also has a few issues like bloatware, which could be unacceptable to some consumers at this price.

Is the Xiaomi 14 a smartphone for you? Well, if you don’t like these giant smartphones that we’re dealing with today, and you still want a high-end phone that tries not to cut too many corners… the Xiaomi 14 may be just right for you. This smartphone offers flagship-grade performance, great build quality, very capable cameras, great performance, and so on. The only thing you’re not getting is a periscope telephoto camera, basically. Everything else is here and accounted for. The Xiaomi 14 is easily one of the best (relatively) compact smartphones available in the market. It’s definitely worth considering, even when its ‘Ultra’ sibling is in play.

There is very little to not like about the Xiaomi 14. The only thing that doesn’t match up to the competition in any sense is the display’s colour accuracy, which is surprisingly lower than many mid-range smartphones of 2024 also, but it can’t be called bad at the same time. Further, the software has a couple of annoyances, but overall I am very happy to have another compact flagship in the market. After Vivo and Zeiss, OnePlus and Hasselblad, it is now time for Xiaomi and Leica to showcase how far smartphone cameras have come with the Xiaomi 14. Now, this smartphone aims to be the new camera king in the Android space, a title currently claimed by the likes of the Vivo X100 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. But can the Xiaomi 14 challenge these two smartphones in the race to become the best camera smartphone?

So when I shot the video version of this review, it was right after it debuted at MWC 2024 but before it arrived on our shores. As such, I couldn’t really put it against its rivals such as the Samsung Galaxy S24—at least, in a Malaysian context. That’s why if you watch our video review of the Xiaomi 14, I ended it by stating that it’s a really good smartphone that will need to be priced below the RM4,099 price tag of the Galaxy S24 if it wants to be competitive against Samsung’s offering. Now in my defence, I had a reason to be wary: the Xiaomi 14 actually costs more than the Galaxy S24 does in Europe. But we don’t live in Europe now do we? In fact, for many Malaysians, the Xiaomi 14 presents itself as an extremely compelling option for anyone seeking a flagship Android smartphone for this year.

The Xiaomi 14 lands squarely in the premium flagship space, and has the likes of the Google Pixel 8 (review) and the Samsung Galaxy S24 (review) to contend with in terms of competition. These are strong rivals, and each has unique strengths and foibles. Both the Pixel 8 and Galaxy S24 shine in the software and camera aspect, though those looking for pure performance might not prefer Google’s offering. The Galaxy S24 is especially notable for the Samsung ecosystem features on offer, which include features like DeX, and others.

Xiaomi’s mainstream flagships have long delivered plentiful performance and clean cameras. That hasn’t changed for 2024. The Xiaomi 14 is a great-looking handset that feels wonderfully snappy in use; the screen is very easy on the eye, and its size continues to set it apart from Apple and Samsung’s equivalent models – without treading on the toes of the top-tier Xiaomi 14 Ultra. It takes wonderfully detailed photos that comfortably keep pace with the best Apple, Google and Samsung have to offer, even if I’m not always a fan of Xiaomi’s colour treatment. Battery life is comfortably better than the Big Three’s most recent models, too. I still have to give the OnePlus 12 top billing as my favourite non-Google/Apple/Samsung smartphone – but if you’re all about smaller handsets that doesn’t compromise quite as much as the competition, consider this a five star score.

The Xiaomi 14 had a mixed display performance in our tests, although it offered a very smooth screen experience in all use cases, with a steady performance in the readability and color attributes. The device’s overall performance, however, did not quite reach that of the predecessor Xiaomi 13, weighed down by the display’s performance in the motion attribute and instability when watching HDR videos. The Xiaomi 14’s screen also lacked uniformity in brightness and color. Although Xiaomi says that the device can reach a peak brightness of 3000 nits, our tests showed the device reaching 2740 nits — but only for HDR video content. Our experts measured 923 nits under 20K lux and only 1490 nits under 100K lux on a classic (20% window) white image pattern. Therefore, the Xiaomi 14 might fall a bit short on readability for intense lighting conditions.

With a score of 135, the Xiaomi 14 delivered fairly average results in the DXOMARK Audio tests. Our testers liked the playback performance through the built-in speakers, thanks to good timbre and dynamics. However, they also noted a lack of low-end, as well as some distortion and clipping when playing back sound at maximum volume. Playback results were overall best when playing games, but almost on the same level for listening to music and watching movies. The Xiaomi did less well in the recording category, with recorded audio clips showing some issues with timbre, as well as dynamics that left some room for improvement. On the plus side, the results for audio zoom and wind noise were good, making the Xiaomi 14 a decent option for isolating specific sound elements from the background and recording in windy conditions. In recording the Xiaomi 14 did best for voice memos. Recordings with the main and selfie cameras were not quite on the same level.

The Xiaomi 14 showed marked improvements in image quality, particularly in video, when compared to its predecessor, the Xiaomi 13, partly due to hardware enhancements such as a larger sensor and bigger aperture. The device received high marks for its texture-noise tradeoff, with images that had a high level of details and low noise in most tested conditions. The texture-noise tradeoff is one of the best we have seen for this price range, outshining its direct competitors. The Xiaomi’s neutral white balance in most situations means that the device is particularly well suited for taking photos of landscapes. However, when taking photos of people outdoors, the images often showed mixed results, with low contrast on faces, and sometimes overexposure of the target.

The new software might not feel like much of an improvement, but it’s about the only area in which the Xiaomi 14 stands still. The processor upgrade speaks for itself, both battery and charging speeds get a tidy little boost, and the camera suite has received some interesting tweaks. The Xiaomi 13 is available now, although at the time of writing the 256GB model could only be ordered directly from Xiaomi, for £849. The 512GB model, meanwhile, is £899, and that’s already made its way to Amazon. Both of those prices are cheaper than the comparative models of the Samsung Galaxy S24 and Apple iPhone 15, so if the Xiaomi 14 can ace the tests in our full review, it could well be the most affordable way to pick up an excellent compact flagship this year.

Xiaomi has paired with Leica to produce a stunning triple-lens camera with tasty HDR capabilities. The floating telephoto shooter produces crispy zoom photos and the Xiaomi 14 can also record slick 4K video. Gamers are well serviced by this mini phone too - the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 can run Genshin Impact and other Android titles perfectly. Battery life is another stunning result for the Xiaomi 14. You get longer life than the Samsung Galaxy S24 and iPhone 15, as it's only gaming and video calls that really drain it fast. Otherwise, expect this smartphone to last two days between charges. And HyperOS gets several years of updates now - but with the same Xiaomi quirks as always.

Xiaomi seemed to focus on two important aspects with the Xiaomi 14 — first is the performance and second is the camera. That we know for sure. Whether that’s enough reason to jump on an upgrade is debatable. However, like many other flagships released in the past year, the upgrades might seem incremental to others. Here’s what we know for a fact — the Xiaomi 14 is still a beast of a phone. It checks out everything you’d ever look for in a flagship smartphone. Top-notch performance, nice design, great display, impressive set of cameras and an improved battery. Folks who would want a powerful smartphone in a compact form factor should definitely make the Xiaomi 14 among their top choices for a new flagship smartphone this 2024.

The Xiaomi 14 is a pricey phone, but for the most part, it justifies it with excellent hardware and few drawbacks. Overall, the handset is a capable mini flagship with plenty of big-screen features - a full stack of excellent cameras, LTPO OLED, fast charging, solid battery life and plenty of storage. What we would like to see in the next version of the Xiaomi 14 is autofocus on the ultrawide camera, better selfie and better thermals during long and heavy workloads. We found the Xiaomi 14 to throttle significantly under load, which may ruin your gaming experience in some cases. Still, the Xiaomi 14 is easy to recommend as it's perhaps the most capable compact Android flagship currently on the market.

I haven’t spent a ton of time with the Xiaomi 14, but I really like the device at this point. That’s largely due to the impressive cameras capable of taking excellent shots, and the great size. It’s not all perfect, though, as Hyper OS takes a bit of getting used to. Xiaomi is also offering four major OS updates and five years of security patches, which is good but not on par with Samsung and Google in 2024. Meanwhile, the £849 (~$1,076) price tag is slightly more expensive than the Galaxy S24, although you are getting more impressive hardware. Nevertheless, you should definitely consider the Xiaomi 14 if you want a great camera experience in a more pocket-friendly form factor.

The Xiaomi 14 retains the same design as its predecessor, and the 6.3-inch AMOLED panel is the ideal size — it isn't as small as the Zenfone 10 or as massive as the OnePlus 12. Would I advise you to buy the Xiaomi 14 for €999.90? Yes, but there is a caveat. The only "but" I have is how the Samsung Galaxy S24+ can be purchased at a cheaper price on Amazon. Bear in mind that the Galaxy S24+ is the Xiaomi 14's main competitor. What's undeniable is, the Xiaomi 14 is a top-of-the-range smartphone worthy of the flagship status. I don't think Xiaomi has anything to be ashamed of now when it comes to comparisons with Samsung. The inferiority complex is well behind it by now. In terms of the design and display, Xiaomi literally ticks all the right boxes. Premium materials, IP68, Gorilla Glass Victus, LTPO 2.0 technology, extremely thin bezels... they are all there. The power of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC also sets the Xiaomi 14 apart from its Samsung rivals, which are confined to Exynos chips. Fast charging also makes it far ahead of the game. The only shortcoming of the Xiaomi 14 is it doesn't benefit from the same brand image as an iPhone 15 or a Samsung Galaxy S24, or even a Google PIxel 8.

There’s no doubt that both of the models are quite decent choices in the respective department, while the new HyperOS is a key selling point here. Now, the question is which one to choose between the Xiaomi 14 and 14 Pro smartphones. From the specification point of view, you won’t find that much difference in the first place. Considering the difference, the Pro variant provides a slightly better display and slightly more battery with faster charging. But logically speaking, purchasing the Xiaomi 14 would be ideal for every user since you are getting a combination of flagship-level performance, the latest operating system support, better camera results, and a long-lasting battery. Overall, the non-Pro model is a better deal as compared to the Pro variant, and if you choose Xiaomi 14, you are saving up more money. But still, choosing anyone them won’t be a bad deal either. However, you can check out smartphones like Realme GT5 as an alternative option. Finally, get a smartphone that fits your requirements.

The Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro look very solid on paper and promise a tough fight for the Android crown. With the Galaxy S24 series launch moving closer and closer, the competition will be as fierce as ever. Will all the new hardware and software tricks be enough to give the Xiaomi 14 Series an edge over the competition? It's too early to say, but things are looking very promising.

These are the technical reserves and experience Xiaomi has accumulated in the past few years when it hits the high-end. It has made Xiaomi’s tuning of high-end models more and more mature. Now, the Xiaomi Mi 14 standard version can also be enjoyed by the public with its compact size. Get the same experience as the Pro level. After experiencing the “pain” of impacting high-end products, Xiaomi is now constantly seeking breakthroughs in technology, which will determine Xiaomi’s survival and development in the next 10 years. It has greater space and a promising future.

The Xiaomi 14 & 14 Pro have officially launched, the first Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 smartphones of 2023. Here's a squint at the camera tech and other specs ahead of my unboxing and review, expect the Xiaomi 14 Pro to top a lot of best phones lists! You've also got a Titanium option, if you have even more cash. That SD 8 Gen 3 is a beast, boasting some impressive AI smarts including auto video editing tools and slick gaming chops. So you can expect the Xiaomi 14 series phones to serve up some great camera features and blaze through Genshin and other games. Battery life will also hopefully be great, with 120W charging on that Xiaomi 14 Pro. You've got upgraded camera tech, Leica-branded as usual. That main shooter is a 50MP Light Fusion 900 with Summilux lens, with OIS naturally. If you upgrade to the Xiaomi 14 Pro, you’ll even get a variable aperture lens.

Qualcomm Adreno 750: Graphics chip for smartphones and tablets that is integrated within the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. Qualcomm claims that it is 25% faster than the Adreno 7340 in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and first benchmarks show that the GPU can beat the Apple A17 Pro iGPU.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

In addition to the processor cores, the SoC integrates a WiFi 7 modem, a Hexagon DSP (for AI acceleration) and a Spectra ISP. The integrated memory controller supports fast LPDDR5x memory with up to 4,200 MHz. 5G is included in the chip with the Snapdragon X70 modem.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

It is a small display format for smartphones. You shouldn't be severely defective in vision, and you won't see much detail on the screen and only have a small resolution available. For that, the device should be small and handy, easy to transport.
