Upcoming Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 3 adopts AMD Ryzen 5000 & other new options
The Lenovo ThinkPad E series may not be as well known as the ThinkPad T series or as prestigious as the X1 ThinkPad laptops, but it certainly is not unpopular. That is logical, as the Lenovo laptops of the ThinkPad E series are more affordable than other ThinkPads. And they have been available with AMD CPUs for years as well.
The last year model Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 2 was called "the best E ThinkPad till now" by us (available from Amazon). This model featured AMD Ryzen 4000 and it will soon be succeeded by the Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 3 - which uses the newer AMD Ryzen 5000 chips.
Luckily, that is not the only change. Despite the fact that Lenovo keeps the same basic design, the new Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 3 is not purely a CPU upgrade. Among the new features is an optional better screen with 100 % sRGB coverage; color gamut has been a sore point for the ThinkPad laptops of the E series till now.
Another weak point of the ThinkPad E14 Gen 2 was the small 45 Wh battery. The new Lenovo ThinkPad E14 G3 still offers that option, but there is also a new 57 Wh battery available. Speaking of options: As other Lenovo ThinkPad laptops of the 2021 generation, the AMD ThinkPad E14 Gen 3 is going to be available with a silverish-grey color option. To round out the list of new features, the E14 G3 adopts the new Bluetooth 5.2 standard.
Lenovo has not made a formal announcement for the Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 3 yet. With the other 2021 AMD ThinkPad aiming at a May release, it is probably reasonable to expect the E14 Gen 3 around the same time-frame.
Update: Lenovo gave us the spec sheet of the Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 3. There will be no formal announcement for the ThinkPad E14 G3 - as for availability, Lenovo expects it to be available in June in the EMEA region.
