Timex debuts new Expedition Sierra chronographs with 100-meter water resistance

Expedition is Timex's outdoor family, and the Sierra is a field-styled range within that range. It's built around legibility and 100-meter water resistance. Until now it ran only as a three-hand watch, in 40 mm fabric-strap versions currently listed at $139 and $149.

Timex has now added a chronograph to the same lineup. Two references arrived in mid-August at $179 each — they both share a 43 mm case and differ in dial color and strap only. These are three millimeters larger and $30 to $40 above the non-chronograph versions.

The dial places three sub-dials at 12, nine and six o'clock: a 1/10-second register at the top, an elapsed-minutes counter at nine and running seconds at six. That leaves three o'clock free for the date window, which is visible between the applied markers.

The TW2Y89200 sports a black dial with an orange central seconds hand and a leather strap — Timex sources this through the Leather Working Group. The TW2Y89300 uses a khaki dial with a yellow seconds hand on a matching fabric strap. It's fitted with quick-release spring bars that allow strap changes without any tools.

Please note that only the leather reference has Timex's sustainable label, which is because of the LWG certification and not any difference in the watch itself. The fabric version is the one with the tool-free strap change, so the two pretty much trade advantages.

Both dials use Arabic numerals at the even hours with a triangular marker at 12, an outer minute track, and luminous fill on the hands and indices. Water resistance is printed on the dial, and Timex's classic Expedition mountain logo sits above the six o'clock register. Power comes from a battery-driven quartz analog movement. Timex has not published a caliber number, case material or crystal specification for either reference.
