Timex's new automatic GMT watches are full stainless-steel and come in three colorways
Deepwater is Timex's dive collection, and the Meridian 200 has been its centrepiece since arriving a little over a year ago. The line has run in quartz and automatic three-hand forms. Watches in this lineup are priced from roughly $240 to $550, so you can pitch them against, say, Seiko's divers at similar money.
As of July 30, Timex has combined the two (Deepwater and Meridian 200) into a single reference. The Deepwater Meridian 200 Automatic GMT is adorned with a 21-jewel self-winding movement with a 24-hour hand, which the collection had never previously offered together. Three dial colours are available as a part of the new launch — black (TW2Y63900), blue (TW2Y64000) and green (TW2Y64100) — at $549 each.
Where the standard Meridian uses a unidirectional dive timer, the GMT gets a two-tone ceramic bidirectional top ring marked to 24 hours. The two colours furthermore split day from night. Bidirectional rotation is important if you're aligning a third time zone — that is why the watch deliberately trades dive-timing convention for travel function.
Again, Timex has not named the caliber, describing it only as a 21-jewel automatic. Nor has it stated whether the 24-hour hand adjusts independently of the local hour, which determines how the watch is set when travelling. Some outlets state that a Miyota movement is what powers the watches.
The case measures 42 mm across, 14.5 mm thick and 48.8 mm lug to lug, in brushed and polished stainless steel. You get 200 meters of water resistance, backed by a screw-down crown behind a guard and a screw-on caseback. The crystal is sapphire with anti-reflective coating.
A five-link jubilee-style bracelet with quick-release spring bars and a butterfly clasp pretty much completes the package. A date window sits at three o'clock, and the hands and markers carry luminous fill.
