Mobvoi, the maker of the popular TicWatch S and TicWatch E smartwatches, might have figured out how to improve battery life for wearable devices. The innovation comes in the form of a stacked screen design – an OLED screen and a simple black/white LCD one on top – which will be featured in its upcoming TicWatch Pro.
In order to save more power, the OLED screen will be active only when the user needs to see advanced functions and the simple LCD on top becomes completely transparent. When the OLED is not used, the LCD will work as the main screen, displaying only a few essential parameters. This approach can offer increased battery life of up to 2 days, but there is also an Essential Mode that can extend the battery time far beyond the normal limits.
While in the Essential Mode, TicWatchPro completely deactivates the OLED screen and shuts down the Wear OS. The simple LCD can still display the time, user’s heart rate and number of steps taken, and this may extend battery life up to 30 days. Other noteworthy features coming with the TicWatch Pro are the NFC emitter for contactless payments and identification, plus the LTE connectivity for the Western versions only, apparently.
Even though this model has just been announced for China, The Verge confirms that there should be a global release this summer, and the MSRP is set to be below US$300.
