A Portal‑inspired fan design has turned Valve’s upcoming Steam Machine into a "Companion Gabecube": a 3D‑printable sleeve with LED-based heart panels, which will be free to download.

Valve’s new upcoming venture, the Steam Machine, has another fan-made accessory: the "Companion Gabecube," a 3D‑printed sleeve that wraps the console in Portal’s iconic Companion Cube design and will be released as a free download. Accessory manufacturer Dbrand has already teased the companion cube skin for the same - however, it's slated to release in 2026, alongside the Steam Machine. This one jumps the gun, and the best part is that if you own a 3D printer, the files will be free.

The decorative enclosure designed by MakerWorld creator "Ellanas" that the Steam Machine slides into like a shell. It essentially transforms Valve’s compact PC into a floating Companion Cube homage. The MakerWorld listing shows a multi-part PETG print with a heart-lit front panel, corner details, rear cut‑out for airflow, and a single published print profile tuned for Bambu Lab printers (the P1S is curr. $449 on Amazon).

In the Reddit thread, the designer stated that the Gabecube will not be sold commercially. As mentioned earlier, the 3D files will be shared for free once final fitment is validated. They tell commenters that anyone with access to a 3D printer will be able to download and print the case themselves.

Thanks to the hype around the Steam Machine, the Reddit post quickly climbed past two thousand upvotes and dozens of comments. It's clear how strongly the concept resonates with Valve’s PC gaming audience. Alongside praise, there was some skepticism regarding how much the sleeve might impact thermals, and understandably so. Multiple users were asking about cooling, and the designer replied that the rear is open and that the top and sides include vents, though real‑world testing will fall to early adopters.

If early community projects like this gain traction, Valve’s new machine will likely launch into a huge ecosystem of printable cases, docks, and mounts - without Valve having to produce any of it itself. You can view some of the best Steam Machine community designs here.
