In Flotsam, players dive into a post-apocalyptic world where the only plentiful resource is trash. As the leader of a group of survivors known as drifters, you build a floating city using wood, scrap, plastic and whatever else the ocean provides. Beyond constructing shelter, you will need to secure drinking water, generate energy and manage complex, multi-layered production chains. Changing weather, diseases and global events constantly put your fragile community at risk, adding a noticeable survival component to the building gameplay – one that at times recalls fan favorite Frostpunk.
Exploration plays a key role in Flotsam. The entire city is mobile, allowing players to sail across the world map and discover new locations. Along the way, you can explore ruins, rescue stranded survivors, gather resources and unlock story-driven areas that introduce new content and mechanics. Each drifter comes with a unique background, distinct traits and specific skills. Chemists, for example, enable advanced water treatment, while farmers boost food production – both crucial to keeping your floating settlement alive.
One of Flotsam’s biggest strengths is its presentation. Despite the post-apocalyptic setting, the colorful, cartoon-style visuals create an upbeat atmosphere, supported by a calm and cozy soundtrack. Quirky ideas like eel-powered electricity add a lighthearted twist. On Steam, players often highlight the game’s charming DIY aesthetic and its laid-back pacing – qualities that make Flotsam an ideal choice for relaxed, stress-free gaming sessions.
On the downside, Flotsam has faced criticism for technical issues such as frozen UI elements and occasional performance drops. Some players were also frustrated by the slow pace of development during Early Access and felt that the overall content was somewhat limited. Still, the game holds a solid average rating of 77% on Steam, based on over 3,000 reviews. Steam user Molly sums it up simply: “Great Fun Survival Builder Game.”
