The 8BitDo SN30 Pro Bluetooth Controller was released about five years ago, and while it is long overdue for a successor, 8BitDo doesn't seem ready to release one. Nevertheless, it remains a great controller with wide compatibility and a form factor that makes it an excellent travel companion.
When it launched in 2018, it cost $44.99, and when 8BitDo relaunched it with Hall Effect joysticks, it retained that price tag. However, the SN30 Pro Bluetooth Controller is often available at a discount. Now is one of those times, as Amazon has slashed the price by 20%, which means you can purchase the 8BitDo SN30 Pro Bluetooth Controller for $35.99.
This price matches its Prime Day deal, so if you didn't grab it then because you didn't have an Amazon Prime subscription, now is a good time to do so. The discount applies to the Gray variant only, as the G Classic edition retains its full price. There's also the option to purchase the controller in Crystal Purple and Jade Green, both of which have a see-through design. However, they are a bit more expensive at $38.99 and are exclusive to 8BitDo's eShop.
The 8BitDo SN30 Pro Bluetooth Controller has a retro design with clickable joysticks, rumble vibration, and motion controls (Switch only). The controller is compatible with the Nintendo Switch/Switch 2, Raspberry Pi, Android, Windows, and any of Apple's operating systems (iOS, tvOS, iPadOS, macOS). It is also one of the few 8BitDo controllers with full compatibility with SteamOS.
Users can choose between Switch input, X-input, and D-input modes. However, unlike the 8BitDo Pro 2, which has a switch, this one requires a button combination when powering up the controller. This is one of the controller's drawbacks, as it means you have to remember or always look up the combination when you want to pair it to a device that requires a different input mode.
The 8BitDo SN30 Pro has a non-removable 480mAh battery that should provide up to 18 hours of use on a single charge. And when you run out of charge, you can connect it to your device using a USB-C cable and proceed to use it as a wired controller.
