Microsoft has announced a new line of special edition Xbox controllers, with three models launching simultaneously on September 9. Dubbed the Breaker series, the initial lineup includes the Heart Breaker, Ice Breaker, and Storm Breaker, each featuring bold new colorways and a jagged design language that distinguish them from the standard controller lineup.
For the first time, Microsoft is releasing all three models simultaneously, a different approach from past series like the Pulse Cipher, which launched one after another. Buyers can preorder the new controllers now through the Microsoft Store for $79.99. Amazon has also listed the controllers on its website, and is expected to accept preorders soon as well.
Breaker series special edition Xbox controllers
The Breaker series brings three striking designs, beginning with the Ice Breaker controller. This model brings a fresh vibe with a frosty, glacier-blue design and a translucent finish that creates a unique, crystallized aesthetic against the various shades of blue. There are also blue accents across the thumbsticks and ABXY buttons, as well as textured grips to give it the familiar Xbox controller feel.
The Heart Breaker goes all out with a bold, translucent top case that reveals a vibrant mix of neon pink, purple, and blue hues, while the Storm Breaker opts for a more sophisticated look with an opaque top case and a metallic D-pad, grounded in a palette of black and white with subtle silver highlights.
Aside from the different colors, all three controllers retain the core features of the standard Xbox Wireless Controller, including textured grips and a dedicated Share button. Unfortunately, Microsoft hasn't updated the joysticks in these controllers, which means they are still susceptible to stick drift. That said, the Heart Breaker, Ice Breaker, and Storm Breaker controllers are compatible with Xbox Series X|S and will work well with the Xbox One, Windows PC, and mobile devices via Bluetooth.
