ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 3 & ThinkPad P1 Gen 3: Lenovo's slimmest mobile workstations gain LTE support
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme and its workstation counterpart were two of the biggest additions to the ThinkPad lineup in the last years. Made to compete with machines like the Dell XPS 15, these 15.6 inch ThinkPad laptops combine a thin & light design with powerful components. The first version was introduced in 2018, last year, there was a small update. In 2020, the third gen of the ThinkPad P1 and ThinkPad X1 Extreme will come to the market and like their predecessor, the will still use the same design of the first generation X1 Extreme and P1.
So while the new ThinkPad P1 Gen 3 and ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 3 are not extremely big updates, they still include some interesting new features. The most important is the addition of LTE-A, as the previous versions of the slim premium ThinkPads lacked WWAN support completely. Another new communications feature is Wi-Fi 6, which comes along with the Comet-Lake H series CPUs used in the X1 Extreme Gen 3 and P1 Gen 3.
Like the ThinkPad P15, both will be available with a new display option, a brighter 600 cd/m² 4K-UHD IPS panel. Additionally, Lenovo claims that the new version of the ThinkPad X1 Extreme / P1 features a less smudge-prone coating and enhanced speakers.
